All businesses and organisations producing waste, as well as companies offering related services or equipment, will be potential users of the results of the European Commission's E-WIN (European Waste Information Network) project. E-WIN aims to establish a Europe-wide knowledge transfer network and information brokerage services to disseminate information and best practices on waste management. The founding principle of E-WIN is the effective management of distributed information to provide timely access and meet end-user needs. By exploiting the World Wide Web and developing a DDD (discover - distil - disseminate) information service, E-WIN will: - Enable access to pan-European multimedia information and expertise in waste management; - Make proprietary databases accessible through a common interface; - Provide users with regular updates of information; - Revolutionise the way organisations can access, store, retrieve and process relevant information; - Provide a multimedia platform for companies to advertise waste management equipment and services. These advertisements will generate income for the E-WIN network ensuring its long-term future. E-WIN will develop a multimedia service based on Web technology, which will provide access to proprietary databases via a common interface. A query mechanism based on existing international standards will enable data to be collected and delivered automatically to users, via push technology. In this way, E-WIN will keep users updated with relevant information delivered to their personal file. E-WIN is one of the projects selected following the 1997 call for proposals for Exploiting Europe's Public Sector Information, under the INFO2000 programme.
