The European Commission, DG V, has issued an open call for tender concerning a scientific evaluation of the information on the use and volumes of antimicrobial agents used in Member States. The evaluation should provide a detailed description of the quantities of antimicrobial agents used and stratified for use in human and veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and plant protection. Furthermore, the study should specify the use of antimicrobial agents in human beings in hospitals and also in the community. A system should be developed to compare and follow up prescription of antimicrobial agents, as well as tools to compare the levels between Member States. The aim of the tender is to provide a compilation of comparable data on the consumption of the most common antimicrobial agents used in Member States per person days. Finally the study should aim to identify the existence and nature of surveillance systems in Member States on the use of antimicrobial agents, and how these impact the development of resistant organisms.
