The European Science Foundation's Executive Council will decide whether to approve the launch of up to 10 scientific programmes when it meets in Strasbourg on 25 November 1999. The Foundation's standing committee is recommending the proposals, which are currently being considered by member organisations who choose which programmes they wish to support on an 'à la carte' basis. As long as the programmes are approved by the ESF's Executive Council and sufficient funds are forthcoming, the programmes will be able to start operations in January 2000. The proposed programmes fall under the following fields: - The life and environmental sciences (3 programmes); - Physical and environmental sciences (6 programmes); - Social sciences and the humanities (1 programme).
