The European Environment Agency (EEA) is celebrating its fifth year of work, continuing its mission to provide the European Community and Member States with objective, reliable and comparable information on the environment at a European level. In an anniversary message, Mr Domingo Jiménez-Beltrán, the EEAs Executive Director, reviewed the areas where it has produced its greatest results (networking, monitoring to reporting, and information sharing) and looked forwards to the EEAs prospects for the next five years. We are at a real turning point in relation to environmental reporting coming to maturity. Above all this is thanks to the integration process, as the main tool of progress to sustainable development as an EU goal, but also by the push from all the Institutions for transparency and accountability, he said. Now the EEA plans to continuing acting as: - A public service, providing friendly and easy access to the best available information (The Reference Centre); - A node of an extensive network, using and building on existing capacities, and avoiding duplication (The extended European Information and Observation Network); - Effectively providing information of direct use, by a streamlined Monitoring to Reporting system.
