The Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects Unit (ELSA) has published its final report of a project looking into the future of animal farm breeding and its implications for the consumer. This work was funded under the EU's Fourth RTD Framework Programme. While the report stresses that controversial cloning and transgenesis techniques for food production are not imminent in Europe, it emphasises the need for greater debate of what these techniques represent, above all in the ethical, legal and consumer areas. Looking at the new techniques available, the report analyses issues such as the respective costs of various reproduction techniques, the ethics of introducing them both for the animals concerned and for those consuming them, and the legal consequences of the introduction of these techniques. In addition to addressing the questions raised by these new techniques, the report gives a full explanation of how they are performed and what their possible effects would be.
