CORDIS, the EU's official information service on research, technological development and innovation, has launched a new national information service on Israel. Israel becomes the first state with its own national service on CORDIS that is not a member of the EU or EEA-EFTA. The new service for Israel is part of the CORDIS Gateway to National and Regional Activities. Whilst Israel is not an EU Member State, the country has close relations with the European Union within the framework of the Barcelona process, which attempts to build political bridges and foster cooperation between the EU and the southern Mediterranean/Middle Eastern region. The EuroMed EU-Mediterranean partnership agreement allows Israel to participate in numerous EU programmes, including the research and development (R&D) framework programmes. Research and development (R&D) policy in Israel has created a strong performance in R&D and a high concentration of international research activities. Israel's R&D expertise, which is based on considerable academic excellence, scientific innovation, entrepreneurial strength, the availability of highly qualified human resources and significant synergies between the academic sector and industry, make the country an important Mediterranean R&D partner for the EU. The CORDIS Associate Country Service for Israel, which is maintained in cooperation with the Israeli Directorate for the EU Framework Programme, is an introduction to R&D and innovation activities in Israel. It provides information on relevant news and events and gives an overview of the research, development and innovation situation in Israel. There is also an overview of Israel's involvement in the framework programmes, with links to relevant institutions providing further information. A special portal using the CORDIS Partners service allows users to find partners for R&D in Israel. Finally, an extensive list of contacts and links to R&D stakeholders in Israel is provided. The list covers a range of different subject areas, ranging from general academic and agricultural research to electronics, telecommunications and security studies. Users can also access Israeli research-related databases and online business publications via the CORDIS country service for Israel. The national service provides policy information on R&D in Israel, its participation in EU programmes and on the role of Israel, as a EuroMed partner country, in European Union research cooperation. Along with other CORDIS national services, the Israeli information service aims to provide access to country-specific information and contacts and to contribute to increased coordination among EU Member States and associated countries.
