The European Commission, DG XIV, has published a call for proposals for data collection and study projects in support of the Common Fisheries Policy. The Commission intends to support projects in the following areas during 1996: A. Data collection for biological analyses and assessments, including: - Data collection relating to commercial species: . Breakdown by species, sex, length and/or age of landings; . Follow-up of fishing effort; . Discard estimations; . Estimates of amounts by research vessel campaigns; - Environmental data collection: . Catches of non-commercial species; . Impact of fisheries on the environment; - Data collection: methodology, coordination and synthesis of the aforementioned themes; B. Support for necessary decisions in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP): - Analysis of the selectivity of different fishing gears and fishing techniques, and improvement possibilities; - Analysis of the relation between fishing effort and fishing mortality; - Impact of conservation measures: . Impact of conservation measures on fisheries and the environment; . Retrospective analysis on consequences originating from TAC decisions; . Evaluation of the impact on the environment; C. Methodology, evaluation and communication: - Drawing up of synthesis documents summarizing scientific literature related to the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy and ecological matters; - Assistance with the ex-post scientific and/or technical evaluation projects of prior studies funded by the Commission; D. Control and enforcement of regulations: - Input from new technologies (satellites, informatics, networks, advanced biology); - Statistical analysis and data validation; - Control of motor power; - Economic analysis relating to fraud and controls. The Commission will support projects where the intended results will be of assistance to the scientific community when they are providing advice on regulatory measures related to the CFP objectives.
