The Energy Research Group at University College Dublin has published "European Solar Architecture", a book outlining 33 projects supported under the SOLAR HOUSE programme of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energy (JOULE 2). The book brings together papers presented at the SOLAR HOUSE conference held in Barcelona in 1995. The SOLAR HOUSE programme aimed to provoke changes in building design by introducing solar energy into landmark European buildings. The programme provided design and evaluation support and tools to architects, engineers and students in an ambitious and coherent plan to advance solar energy utilization in European buildings. Over 30 RTD projects concerning solar energy applications in buildings were supported by SOLAR HOUSE, including many involving leading European architects, industrial designers and environmental engineers. Some of the projects were high profile public buildings including: the Solar Reichstag in Berlin; new offices for the UK Parliament; an energy efficient conference centre in Linz; a proposal for the new museum at the Acropolis in Athens; and proposals for reconstruction in central Berlin. Other projects supported aimed to improve design quality and to provide information at relevant stages of the design process. These include a natural cooling system, a European Daylighting Atlas and guidelines for the daylight design of buildings.
