The European Commission, DG X, has granted a total of 164 loans for the production of new European audiovisual works under the MEDIA programme. The MEDIA programme supports both the development and distribution of European audiovisual works and the training of European professionals in the audiovisual industry. The 164 projects, which have been selected for loans totalling ECU 4.7 million, were submitted in response to the call for proposals launched in May 1996 (OJ No S 99 of 24.5.1996 p. 22). Loans have been granted to companies across the EU, as well as in Norway and Iceland. Almost half of the awards are for fiction productions, with another fifth for documentaries. A further quarter of the awards are for company loans, with the remaining awards for animated productions and new technologies.
