The latest edition of "IPTS Report" (February 1997), the monthly magazine of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), contains a series of articles focusing on issues relating to urban mobility. This "Urban Mobility" special issue examines a number of research fields which are being developed to respond to the problems caused by congestion and limitations on personal mobility in modern cities. Mobility is fundamental to economic activity, with industrial activity directly, and often seriously, affected by the efficiency of freight transport. The European transport industry must face an enormous challenge if it is to respond with intelligent and competitive solutions and reinforce its market position. Among the subjects addressed by articles in the February 1997 issue of the "IPTS Report" are: - Mobility and communication in the agglomerations of today and tomorrow; - New vehicle technologies; - Transport telematics to improve congested urban areas; - Non-conventional approaches to mobility in urban areas; - Transition to sustainable mobility; - Decisions on optimal urban freight transport.
