The European Commission, DG XII, has published the first volume of a report on "Seismic risk in the European Union" which provides an overview of the main results and achievements of research projects, in the area of seismic risk, funded under the "Climate and natural hazards" sector of the Community's Environment and Climate programme. This first volume covers projects financed between 1990 and 1994. A second volume, due to come out by the end of the year, will cover projects financed under the current programme (1994-1998). The publication brings together papers presented at two meetings, held in Brussels in May 1996, to review EU-funded projects dealing with seismic risk. During these meetings, new developments were presented on the determination and hazard assessment, as well as studies of the seismic behaviour and vulnerability of major structures and buildings in the broad field of earthquake resistant construction and design for the mitigation of seismic risk.
