The European Commission, DGIII (Industry), wishes to publish a self-help guide for industrialists who wish to improve their innovative potential. The aim of the guide is to provide an analysis of company performance in a variety of innovation-related areas along with a guide to best practice and sources of support for innovation. It is proposed that the guide should be structured in three main sections. - The first will be an introductory section dealing with the issue of innovation in general and illustrating its potential through a series of case studies; - The second will be a self-assessment package, also available through CORDIS in software format, which will analyse companies' replies to a series of questions in several key areas, e.g. innovation culture, use of technology and organizational effectiveness; - Finally, there will be a comprehensive listing of major sources of support and advice on innovation in the Member States and at Community level. The Commission would like to involve potential users in this project as early as possible in its development. For this reason companies are asked to provide their opinion on this initiative and their suggestions for possible improvements. These responses will provide the Commission services with valuable input and should ensure that the end product meets users' needs. Innovation is vital to the competitiveness of European industry. Responding to the questionnaire will help the Commission to help you harness Europe's innovative potential.
