The European Commission adopted the draft 1998 budget for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) on 29 May 1997. The total budget proposed is ECU 179 million, of which ECU 84 million will go to research. Of this, ECU 56 million will go to steel research and ECU 28 million to coal research. The draft budget will be sent to the Parliament, Council and ECSC Consultative Committee, for information. It will be definitively adopted by the Commission before the end of the year, taking account of comments received in this period.
