DEUS - Developing European SMEs - is a project funded by the Community's ESPRIT programme which aims to increase understanding of how SMEs can use information on the Internet and World Wide Web. The project will test a number of demand profile hypotheses by tracking the use of the DEUS Information Service, the telematics platform developed for the project. This service does not aim to duplicate the work of existing Internet content providers and databases but to create a system which is designed specifically for SMEs. The objective of the pilot service is to facilitate easy access to useful business-related information as well as to other SMEs, and consequently to support and enhance SME business by allowing them to become closer to their customers and suppliers. The DEUS service will help users connect quickly to the organizations and people that have the answers to questions raised by users. DEUS is managed by the European Multimedia Forum, in partnership with six Chambers of Commerce and Industry from around Europe. The DEUS pilot service will involve 80 trial installations. At the end of the study a report will be submitted and input into EU policy proposals designed to ensure the competitiveness of European SMEs in global markets.
