The European Multimedia Forum (EMF) is holding a meeting on 28-29 October 1996 which will address topics of interest to companies and organizations working with the Internet. The two-day meeting will include previews of simulators developed by the DEUS and MAID projects, both funded by the European Commission.

DEUS is an ESPRIT (Community's specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies) research project, managed by the European Multimedia Forum, in cooperation with the European Commission and several Chambers of Commerce. The aim of the project is to examine how best the information requirements of SMEs can be addressed by the use of telematics. A methodology for the organization and distribution of relevant information between SMEs is being developed and tested.

The MAID project is financed under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Telematics Applications of common interest. It is managed by the European Design Centre, in cooperation with the European Commission and partners in nine EU countries. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the viability and cost-effectiveness of using multimedia and virtual reality, over the Internet, in the design industry. This is being done by developing and implementing systems which allow designers to interactively access multimedia databases, integrate data into their own design computing environment, participate in distant work groups, and implement projects at a distance.

In addition to presentations of these two projects, the EMF meeting will include a presentation on copyright and related rights in the Information Society. Specialists will brief participants on the substantial changes to current copyright and neighbouring rights laws due to be adopted at the forthcoming WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) Diplomatic Conference, in December 1996.

There will also be a discussion on the definition of "good" online content and the development of criteria and tools in this area. Speakers will include representatives from the European Commission, Infonie, Belgium Online, Belgacom, Italia Online and Ogilvy and Mather.
