The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) in Seville, part of the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), has published a report on "Environment and Employment". The report, prepared by the IPTS on behalf of the European Parliament's Committee on Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection, examines the impact of environmental policies and trends on employment in the European Union. The report looks at the role of environmental regulation and concludes that, contrary to the traditional perception of environmental regulation as a "job killer", such regulation has contributed to the creation of jobs in such areas as public administration, education and amenity and land management, and has helped to create the now strategically significant environmental goods and services industry (EGS). The implications of the pursuit of sustainable development for health and for the structure of the employment market are also examined.
