The Demokritos University of Thrace is one of the partners in the Greek Innovation Relay Centre. Among the many services, in addition to answering wide-ranging queries from the research community, provided to its clients - mainly companies from the local area - is partner-searching for the submission of proposals. One recent successful partner search, using the CORDIS Partners database, has shown the value of the system. Performed on behalf of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the Demokritos University of Thrace, it aimed to find a partner in the field of robotic applications. A corresponding entry from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool was found, searching for partners to submit a proposal to the BRITE-EURAM programme in that same field. The matching of these two institutions has led to the successful submission of a proposal to the BRITE-EURAM programme entitled "Vision based high-speed laser cutting of complex shapes, especially for the embroidery and lace industries". The LASERVISION project started in March 1997 and will run for two years. It aims to design and construct a machine suitable for moving a laser cutting system at high speed over material held in place on a flat bed.
