Broadband services for everyone over fixed wireless access networks

Objective

BROADWAN has three major goals:
- Develop an economical realistic network architecture to provide true broadband services for all citizens in Europe.
- Bring European industry in the lead for next generation wireless solutions.
- Motivate advanced utilisation of broadband services at all levels of the society by performing wireless demonstrations and trials in rural areas.

Business, organisations, education, health care, culture, and community authorities take more and more advantage of broadband services. Provided that this is achieved European-wide it is beneficial to the people as well as business industry without damaging the environment. Furthermore, broadband technology helps European business, and radio based technology has, in particular, the potential of improving third world societies dramatically. Efficient wireless access systems ensure that everyone in Europe can get access for broadband services within a reasonable time frame.

A pan-European full service coverage requirement leads to an access networking structure where wireless solutions are necessary as well as attractive. European broadband industry in the lead will have a very interesting global market. In some areas wireless solutions will interwork with or compete with other solutions, in other areas they represent the only possibility. The radio solutions will be important for competition and represent an extension of the fixed network into the broadband nomadic and mobile domain. BROADWAN encompasses a total solution for universal hybrid broadband access networks for fixed and nomadic users.

This will be achieved through many innovations within global coverage architecture, new generation adaptive equipment and automatic network planning and management software. The 25 BROADWAN partners comprise operators, industry, academia, and consultancy from 10 countries representing all parts of Europe. The significant numbers of SMEs are particularly focussing on broadband service provision.
