Objective
The goal of proposed project is to apply the emerging concept of Symmetry Analysis (SA) to improving and optimising a novel technology of Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of composite materials based on Non-linear Acoustics combined with Time Reversal Acoustics (TRA). Focusing of ultrasound with the use of TRA provides extremely effective way of concentrating acoustic energy both in space and in time and thus may have numerous applications in exploring non-linear acoustic effects in NDE. We will use SA as an efficient means for solving non-linear systems of equations for analysis of the TRA focusing in periodic non-linear composite materials.
In the laboratory set up developed at Artann Laboratories, which will be used for obtaining experimental data for theoretical analysis and for testing the theoretical predictions, the TRA focusing is performed with the use of contact transducers and resulting acoustic oscillations are measured using laser vibrometry. To optimise TRA based focusing of acoustic energy in time and space for NDE of composite materials, the relationships of the acoustic fields with the parameters of the transmitted and received signals, such as amplitude, spectrum, form and duration, will be analysed. Recommendations resulting from the theoretical analysis will be implemented in the laboratory set up and tested in the composite materials with different level and localization of damage.
