Trends research enabler for design specifications

Objective

The overall goal of the TRENDS project is the achievement of an interactive software for the elaboration of design trend boards for product designers in B to C markets such as for the automotive and original equipment manufacturers. In the current industrial context, design orientations play a strategic role during new product development process. Early decisions coming from involved stakeholders like industrial designers, marketing and innovation managers have a decisive impact on the further manufactured products' competitiveness. Thus, the commercial success of an object design is depending on its balance between targeted consumers values and their translation into objects forms, colours and textures.

Three innovative technologies have to be mobilised and greatly enhanced to accomplish the ambitious TRENDS scientific and technological goal: Intelligent Web crawling to collect automatically images from the Web and other digital databases, using a semantic approach; Automatic image analysis to automate the maximum of currently " hand-made " tasks during the elaboration of the trend boards; Semantic multimedia search engine to link lexical and iconic information on the base of semiotic and semantic knowledge. These achievements will be embedded into a Human Machine Interface (HMI) that will mix image and text retrieval, offering enhanced ergonomic characteristics to its prospective end users.

The proposed TRENDS system will contribute to significantly reduce design delays, costs and greatly improve product creativity thanks to a more efficient trend boards' elaboration process. Thanks to its cross lingual information retrieval capacities, TRENDS will provide better exhaustiveness through the analysis of more data and sectors of influence. In this way, the TRENDS proposed software will be a multi-disciplinary support dedicated to specific professions involved in the early design process such as in marketing, innovation, design, and ergonomics areas.
