VEMUS (Virtual European Music School) aims at developing an open, highly interactive, and networked multilingual music tuition framework for popular instruments such as the trumpet, the flute, and the clarinet.
VEMUS will develop and validate innovative pedagogically motivated e-learning components addressing three learning settings:
(i) a self-practicing environment, equipped with advanced tools and automatic performance evaluation to provide constructive feedback maximizing the effectiveness of practicing,
(ii) innovative tools for teaching music in group settings and in the classroom to support collaborative learning and group activities,
(iii) a distance learning platform that will not only provide a content repository but also communication and progress monitoring tools that will enable it to become a virtual meeting, practicing and remote coaching place.
VEMUS will build on the knowledge and results of the successful IMUTUS project that delivered an efficient practicing environment for the recorder; it will extend the pedagogical and technological basis of IMUTUS to cover additional popular instruments, additional learning environments, and enhanced pedagogical scenarios. Preliminary validation activities carried out by IMUTUS clearly showed a strong potential for the concept and approach. VEMUS will scale-up validation activities to obtain more coherent and statistically meaningful results and to identify the critical factors for wider deployment.
The VEMUS consortium gathered in its ranks all the necessary expertise from the critical areas involved and clearly adopts a European dimension with the participation of partners from 6 countries, 3 of which are new or candidate member states. Using music as the main vehicle and engaging groups in different countries and diverse contexts, VEMUS seeks to reach people from different backgrounds and cultures, creating cultural links and ensuring a larger sharing of knowledge and research results and a larger impact.
