Discussion paper and infographic(s) on the links between agricultural trade, invest- ments, environmental sustainability and human well-being

Review, characterize and map the broad links between agricultural trade, investments, environmental sustainability and human well-being (this also includes equity and risk issues related to climate change, water and land use). The analyses makes maximum use of existing trade statistics from International Trade Centre (ITC), UN and WTO, as well as online resources such as TradeMap, Market Access Map, UNCTAD TRAINS and Sustainability Map.

Webinar to discuss the results of WP1

Organise a webinar to discuss the results of WP1. During the workshop the results of the initial analyses are presented and discussed with sector representatives, social movements and policymakers, followed by a joint discussion of the framing of subsequent analyses

Online database of sustainable trade case studies

SCIO makes all case studies available in a searchable online database on the Sustainable Trade Hub

Communication toolkit with a suite of tem- plates for all project communication

UH, together with OSOL (WP6 leader), facilitates effective communication with the project's principal target groups: European and national policymakers, WTO, interest groups, the public, and the research and scientific community. Elaboration of a communication plan and of a Communication Toolkit with a suite of templates for all project communication activities.

Enhanced engagement strategy and civil so- ciety-stakeholder-policy dialogue

To revisit the current engagement of civil society actors and stakeholders related to social and environmental goals within the context of trade negotiations, the WTO and FTAs or Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs)

Discussion paper and infographic(s) on the role of sustainability goals in trade rules

Examine how sustainability goals are currently included in trade rules (WTO rules; EU bilateral and regional trade agreements; public and private standards). The review starts with existing databases on international standards provided by FAO, UNCTAD and ESCAP. The analysis covers all 17 Goals and 78 SDG indicators with focus on SDG1 'No poverty', SDG2 'Zero Hunger' and SDG3 'Good Health and Well-being', as well as SDG6 'Clean Water', SDG13 'Climate Action' and SDG15 'Life on Land'.

Discussion paper and infographic(s) on trends in agri-food trade

Analyze and map EU agri-food trade flows in global trade. The analysis includes the identification of trends in trade and trade regimes, such as increasingly protectionist policies in some significant economies, possible trade disturbances linked to Brexit or the role of the CAP in supporting competitiveness, innovation in the agri-food sector and food product quality

Suite of dissemination materials

Coordinate the implementation of all engagement and dissemination activities. Related to this, a project-internal process is jointly elaborated and implemented that helps to mediate differences in positions, views and conclusions

Common data pool on sustainability stand- ards and competitiveness

Assessment of the environmental and social costs and benefits of FVCs in four case studies. The related analysis will build on earlier work for DG AGRI (see CRPA profile). The analysis focuses on labour costs and environmental legislation. The basic assumption is that efficient competition (taking social/environmental costs into account) is reached when production factors are remunerated according to their marginal value product without exploitation of labour or the environment (Lead: CRPA, Co-lead: NWU, Support: ESRF, AUA)

Methodological guidelines and reporting template

Jointly elaborate guidance documents and a common reporting template for the 15 in-depth case studies to facilitate comparative analysis and synthesis. OXFAM to revisit and contribute relevant guidance elaborated at the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) (Lead: UH, Co-lead: OSOL, Support: CRPA, UPM, FRAUNHOFER, UM)

Information needs of key actors

Review of the information needs of key actors and elaboration of a semantic framework for resource annotation An encompassing review of the information needs of key stakeholders and decisionmakers of the type of information required of ways to acquire it and of strategies for engaging as many users as possible from the beginning informs WP6 activities To facilitate the process a detailed but concise questionnaire is created aimed at gathering relevant information and resources Existing procedures and processes such as EU IAs Trade SIAs TSD Committees and related to Economic Partnership Agreements are examined

Analytical framework

Communication plan

UH together with OSOLWP6 leader facilitates effective communication with the projects principal target groups European and national policymakers WTO interest groups the public and the research and scientific community Elaboration of a communication plan and of a Communication Toolkit with a suite of templates for all project communication activities

Data management plan

Data management plan UH produces a Data Management Plan for the project within six months of the start of the grant and reviews the DMP at regular intervals

Evidence-based communication platform: Sustainable Trade Hub

Evidence-based communication platform 'Sustainable Trade Hub'. Design and operate an interactive platform on the linkages between agricultural trade, markets, investments, environmental sustainability and human well-being. The platform provides data, information and insights at a global scale to relevant stakeholders (policymakers, researchers, analysts and citizens) about global agricultural trade, sustainability and investments, data from MATS case studies and relevant external resources. It offers analytics and visualization functionalities and allows users to build their data stories and share them within the platform and with their broader communities, thereby enhancing the discourse and communication between stakeholders. The Sustainable Trade Hub also includes a project-internal area aimed at fostering the exchange of information, analysis and discussion among project partners
