The power of diversity and social inclusion as a mean for reducing air pollution and achieving green urban nexus in climate neutral cities

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - DivAirCity (The power of diversity and social inclusion as a mean for reducing air pollution and achieving green urban nexus in climate neutral cities)

Período documentado: 2021-09-01 hasta 2023-02-28

When facing urban challenges, in practice not every human counts the same and not all voices are heard. Poor air quality in cities is responsible for over half a million deaths in Europe every year, attributed to PM2.5 and NO2. Yet not everyone is equally at risk.

The aim of DivAirCity is to address the equation of social inequality, health conditions and air pollution in cities within the scope of the Sustainable Development Goals, valuing diversity and social inclusion to achieve innovative, creative, culture- driven, green and carbon neutral urban society. It involves 26 EU organisations and 68 external stakeholders from all five continents and creates replicable pilots starting from 5 EU cities: Aarhus (DK), Bucharest (RO), Castellon (ES), Orvieto (IT), Potsdam (D).

The main objectives that DivAirCity intends to accomplish are:
• To shift the urban paradigm by valuing human diversity as a resource to define new services/models towards cultural-driven green cities.
• To strengthen the nexus between people, places, peace, economic growth, and its impact on air quality and decarbonisation.
• To empower 6+1 protected categories when it comes to NBS, air pollution and climate challenges.
• To renaturalise cities by making them more sustainable and citizen friendly.

These objectives are to be met by:
• Inclusive participatory activities and co-design interventions in each city.
• An equal representation of data.
• Business models and smart city climate contracts.
• Wide media dissemination campaigns
• Twinning mechanisms to replicate the activities carried out by DivAirCity.
During the first 18 months of the project, several activities have been carried out, which can be grouped into five groups:

DivAirCity data and metrics. At DivAirCity we take data protection very seriously. In this regard, GDPR compliance has been taken into account in all processes. First of all, DivAirCity has developed a framework to include all voices, but specifically from the 6+1 protected categories, which is the main focus of our project. Also, key performance indicators (KPIs) have been defined for the five pilots and allow us to develop the rest of the project activities. This is what we mean by the concept of "inclusive data"

Co-creation and Urban Living Labs. First, stakeholders were identified and the community building process was initiated, with regular meetings. In this period, more than 60 co-creation activities have taken place in the 5 cities in total. The Pan-European Contest has also started, where more than 200 participants aged 13-19 have registered and formed their team. We are currently waiting for the national winners from each country. We encourage you to follow them on the project's instagram account: @divaircity ! The Communities of Practice (CoP) in the cities have also been set up and several design sprint workshops have been held in recent months to co-design the concepts with input from stakeholders and technical staff. Apart from that, the development of Urban Living Labs has been initiated in the five cities, with special attention to the needs of each municipality and protected categories. This is what we mean by the concept of "empowering citizens".

Business Models and Smart Contracts. Desk research has been conducted on the possible Blockchain to be used and a platform solution has been identified for the project. MSCCP and SCCCP requirements have been defined. A first beta version of the real DivAirCity Blockchain has also been developed as an example and presented in the last Consortium Meeting. Cities are defining the Business Models to be used in the intervention sites and the Action Plan.

Monitoring and assessing the impact. Sensors have been installed and analysis of environmental, social, health and economic data is being carried out.

Communication, dissemination and twinning. The project's social networks have been created in order to disseminate it as widely as possible:
• Website: www.divaircity.eu
• Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/379108943383411
• Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0dl0kjW_ALLadD_fmC0qtw

• Twitter account: https://twitter.com/divaircity
• LinkedIn profile: https://be.linkedin.com/company/divaircityh2020
• Tik Tok account: https://www.tiktok.com/@divaircity

The first of the five cities portrait that will make up the project's documentary has also been made and soon the rest of the cities will follow.
DivAirCity creates twinning partnerships at different levels to enable knowledge transfer and sharing. Research to research activities are linked, cities to cities partnerships are built starting from the cities represented in DivAirCity.
Communications have also been initiated to replicate the activities carried out at DivAirCity in other cities across Europe and wider, in order to empathise and be part of a common vision for better innovative culturally-driven cities.
The activities to be carried out in the coming months with respect to the previous classification are:
• DivAirCity data and metrics. The data from the air quality sensors will be processed and a federated data system will be created where all the results and tools of the project will be displayed.
• Co-creation and Urban Living Labs. The action plan to be carried out in the intervention areas will be defined. In the first instance, a temporary intervention will be carried out and, with the positive results of these interventions, a permanent intervention will be proposed. Citizen Science activities will continue to be carried out.
• Business Models and Smart Contracts. A final version of the DivAirCity DApp and the Smart Cities Climate Contracts will be realized. A federated data system will be created where all project information and tools will be shared.
• Monitoring and assessing the impact. Sensors have been set in the intervention sites and following DivAirCity Team will process the data and make the baseline analysis. An environmental, social, health and economic impact analysis will be conducted before, during and after the intervention.
• Communication, Dissemination and Twinning. The Pan-European Contest will culminate with an event in Brussels in which the national winners will participate. The documentary and city portraits will be finalized with a final event in Brussels. There will also be a training program for city councils and a replication of the project outputs by other cities.
