Periodic Reporting for period 1 - GAMBAS (Galileo Advanced features for Maritime domain: Breakthrough Applications for Safety and Security)
Reporting period: 2021-01-01 to 2022-06-30
However, oceans still represent an extraordinary area of commercial trade, subjects to security and safety issues, as well as illegal activities development. Modern GNSS technology, like Galileo, can bring more than mere navigation. Galileo can contribute to transform and improve Maritime activities thanks to its unique features bringing more safety and security over the seas.
GAMBAS stands for Galileo Advanced features for the Maritime domain: Breakthrough Applications for Safety and security
The GAMBAS project will address the major aspects of the maritime domain safety and security:
• Piracy acts
• Illegal activities, including illegal fishing and drug dealing
• Weather emergencies
The general objective of the GAMBAS project is to support the deployment of Galileo exclusive features in the maritime domain, in order to improve:
• safety and security at sea;
• detection of illegal activities and associated surveillance means;
• resilience to natural and human-induced emergency situations;
and to develop, integrate, demonstrate, standardize and disseminate these new associated capabilities.
Objective 1: Support and promote new generation anti-piracy distress beacons relying on SAR/Galileo Forward Link availability and performances
Objective 2: Support the development of new Galileo messaging capabilities (Emergency Warning service, remote activation, 2-way messaging, ...) in the maritime domain, to improve coordination and safety during human-induced and natural disasters.
Objective 3: Support the implementation of Galileo functionalities into the vessel equipment, to support their integration into modernized GMDSS
