Periodic Reporting for period 1 - CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities And Social Sciences in Europe)

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe) is a programme supporting research in the area of Humanities and Social Sciences, implemented by 27 research funding institutions from 24 European countries and coordinated by the National Science Centre in Poland. The main goal of the CHANSE Programme was to announce a call for international research projects: Transformations: Social and cultural dynamics in the digital age. CHANSE aims to finance high-quality international research projects and inspire collaboration between researchers and various stakeholder groups, such as: NGOs, cultural institutions, legislators, policy makers, schools, etc.
One of the programme’s priority is also to strongly support knowledge exchange activities and foster relationships between academia and relevant stakeholders, as well as explore and develop new joint actions. By offering new opportunities for international research cooperation in a critical area of enquiry, the CHANSE Programme will deliver a broad range of academic, societal and economic impacts within, across and beyond the partner countries.
The CHANSE program has been co-created by the HERA and NORFACE networks supporting research in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences, respectively.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

The CHANSE Programme was officially launched in January 2021 and the consortium acquired a co-funding of EUR 10 million from the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme.
The official announcement of the Co-funded Call was made on March 9th, 2021. The CHANSE Call was subsequently widely communicated to the research community and interested stakeholders through various national and international channels. Pan-European and national webinars for interested applicants were organised in order to reach the community representing the humanities and social sciences.
The Call consisted of two stages: the 1st stage invited outline proposals and in the 2nd stage full proposals were reviewed. European research community showed high interest in the Call submitting 366 pre-proposals. Out of them, 90 pre-proposals were invited to the 2nd stage of the evaluation process. Each pre-proposal and full proposal was reviewed, evaluated and ranked by the scientific Review Panel, based on the criteria recommended by the European Commission: Excellence, Impact and Quality and Efficiency of Implementation, and Relevance to the call. As a result, 26 projects involving 132 research teams and 182 Cooperation Partners representing non-academic stakeholders and international partners from non-CHANSE countries, were recommended for funding. The overall success rate in the call was 7%.
Programme activities aimed at spreading excellence and promoting diversity in the Humanities and Social Sciences were supported by the Call regulations, encouraging the inclusion of teams from Widening Countries and promoting gender and academic age balance in the project research consortia. As a result out of 26 funded projects 21 involved researchers from the Widening Countries, which accounts for 81% of all funded projects.
Within the 1st reporting period, the focus was also on communication and dissemination activities that were crucial to the implementation of the CHANSE Call. The CHANSE Consortium established the channels of communication among the beneficiaries as well as with external entities: CHANSE website (www.chanse.org) and social media channels (www.facebook.com/EUCHANSE/ https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/euchanse and https://twitter.com/euchanse) were launched.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The main outcome of the 1st period of the Programme was the preparation and implementation of the Co-funded Call. Its main goal was to stimulate international collaboration between research communities in Europe and inspire multidisciplinary research in the area of Social Science and Humanities with a focus on the topic of Transformations: Social and cultural dynamics in the digital age. Over 36 million EUR, including 10 million of EU co-funding, was granted to 26 transnational consortia involving at last 4 teams from 4 different countries. Challenges such as the transformation of social relations resulting from the digitalisation of homes, the communication of knowledge about health in the 20th and 21st centuries and challenges for work safety in times of digital transformation will be addressed by researchers awarded in the Call.
The full list of selected projects
In the next phase of the project implementation, CHANSE activities will be focused on monitoring and promoting the funded projects’ results and facilitating knowledge exchange between funded consortia and non-academic stakeholders. These actions will be supported by the CHANSE Knowledge Exchange Facilitator to be selected in an open call. Moreover, the CHANSE consortium will explore possibilities to create new funding opportunities for the research community in Humanities and Social Sciences, and develop additional measure to support the participation of Widening Countries participating in the programme.
