A holistic design of secure vehicular networks: communications, data caching and blockchain services

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SEEDS (A holistic design of secure vehicular networks: communications, data caching and blockchain services)

Reporting period: 2021-03-01 to 2023-02-28

With the rapid development of future connected vehicles, Cyber Security has been gaining increasing importance to the connected systems that are fundamental to our society, health and welfare. It will be given priority to the upcoming areas, including autonomous systems and cyber-physical systems, etc. The SEEDS project sets an ambitious research agenda to fully exploit the potentials of V2X communications, data caching and blockchain services for revolutionizing the security and privacy of vehicular networks. Particularly the overall aim of SEEDS is to accelerate the transfer and deployment of research knowledge between European countries and third-country (TC) partners in order to realize a cross-layer design of reliable and robust security for V2X networks, and meet the challenging security requirements, that is confidentiality, integrity, privacy-preserving, trust and scalability. The technical approach is seeking is two-fold. One is to pursue a new design of spectrum efficient and decentralized approaches to address security challenges in physical layer communications and upper layer content disseminations by fully exploring the practical and theoretical analysis, dynamic nature of channels/traffic patterns and self-learning techniques, which provides the theoretic aspect of the project. Then, the second step is from the practical aspect, where the proposed security methods and their performance will be validated using large scale simulations and testbed provided by the TC partners. The proposed vehicular mechanisms are expected to facilitate an increasing number of vehicular applications with flexible availability, high confidentiality and robust integrity.
1. M1: so far during the first month of the project, we have successfully kicked off our project together with 25 researchers and staff who are working on this project. In this meeting, we recapped our work packages, clarified our roles, management structure and advisory board, updated our current progress on the project implementation led by each WP leaders, also discussed our project planning for the first 12 months including secondment arrangement, communications, dissemination and exploitations, etc. The main work performed so far are summarized as follows:
-- WP1: project kick off by M1 (done);
-- WP2: Initial literature review for non-orthogonal multiple access and its application to secrecy communications (ON TRACK)
-- WP3: A literature review on Proxy Reencryption schemes and secure content dissemination was done (a research paper has been published at MDPI Telecom Journal); Design and implementation of data-centric vehicular security using Proxy Re-encryption (ON TRACK)
-- WP4: D4.1 by M12 (ON TRACK and a preliminary result has been accepted and published by IEEE IoT journal); MS3 by W12 (ON TRACK and a journal paper is submitted to IEEE TVT and under review). A secondment from Beihang to University of Sussex/University of Lisbon has started from M1, there are two ESR are currently in the UK and will stay for 12 months.
M1: Besides our planned research activities, we managed to publicize our project to wider research community using our newly created research website and twitter (@H2020seeds). In addition, we are very active in linking our project with industry, we have invited industry partners, e.g. Samsung and PSCE Forum, etc. So far we have created a research community around our SEEDS project with about 210 researchers subscribing our project updates.
