Decision Support for the Supply of Ecosystem Services under Global Change

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - DecisionES (Decision Support for the Supply of Ecosystem Services under Global Change)

Período documentado: 2021-07-01 hasta 2024-06-30

The DecisionES network general objective is to enhance forest management planning and policy analysis by evolving an integrated and multifunctional ecosystem services supply approach thus effectively contributing to delivery of services under climate change. Further, an innovative dissemination and communication approach will be used to transfer of technology and knowledge to enhance forest management planning and policy analysis. DecisionES plans to realize its strategic vision and general objective through the integration of complementary state-of-the-art multidisciplinary expertise available in its beneficiary and partner institutions.

Specific objectives of DecisionES are the generation of knowledge 1) to project forested landscapes and the provision of ecosystem services under different management regimes and scenarios of global change, 2) to integrate ecosystems management planning and policy processes to effectively address concerns with the sustainability of the provision of ecosystem services, 3) to develop computer-based tools to encapsulate all the models and methods for ecosystem management planning generated by the project and 4) to develop a communication and dissemination platform to facilitate the utilization of new decision support tools by stakeholders in each country/geographical regions (WP4). These objectives will be achieved by integrating knowledge and tools developed under the work organized in the different work packages. DecisionES will contribute to a consistent worldwide quality reference for addressing the delivery of ecosystem services, with products being made available to public administrators, forest owners, and industry for enhanced integration of adaptive strategies in forest management planning and policy analysis in the context of global change.

The project is designed to consolidate knowledge pillars to address strategic themes and key research and innovation areas (e.g. policy and good governance, multi-purpose management of forest resources, enhanced biomass production, sustainable forest products and services supply and forest industrial leadership), of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda 2020 of the Forest-based sector Technology Platform.
The project has contributed to major scientific achievements. These include scientific publications (scientific articles), organization of international conferneces and seminars, and the participation in scientific panels of conferences. Regarding the publications, 19 scientifc articles have been already publihed, 7 have been submitted and 10 are under preparation.

Three international seminars/workshops have been organized, two of them organized in parallel to the annual coordination meetings of the project, specifically with SSAFR2021 in Colorado (USA) and SSAFR2024 in Hondarribia (Spain). On the other hand, thematic sessions devoted to DecisionES where organized at the IUFRO2024 conference.
It is expected to continue meeting the objectives set in terms of secondments and derivative publications in the coming months. Some of the papers are foreseen to benefit society in terms of how to plan felling, such as integrating other regulating ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. One of the most important achievements of the project has been the development of a fire spread simulator and its application on different countries. Its use in forest planning to prevent forest fires has attracted the attnetion of several agencies and governments.
