Periodic Reporting for period 2 - CONSIDER (Sustainable Management of Industrial Heritage as a Resource for Urban Development)

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

CONSIDER aims to develop sustainable management model (SMM) for industrial heritage sites (IHS) for the benefits of the local communities as a resource for strengthening collective identities, improving the urban landscape, promoting ecofriendly solutions, and contributing to the urban economy and a sustainable future of the city. It will investigate SMM for industrial heritage while exploring participatory governance models as a tool to better integrate IHS with European society. Deindustrialisation processes all around Europe give rise to social, economic and environmental problems that are resulting from structural change. Thus, there is an urgent need to find SMM to overcome these challenges. 3 research objectives are; i) To expand on what is considered as industrial heritage, how to safeguard them ii) To investigate the history of sites to identify most influential factors used to maximise the benefit iii) To explore inclusive governance and participatory models as a tool to better integrate industrial heritage with society. The innovative side of this model is its inclusive approach to the problem (regionally, sectorial, taking into consideration gender aspects, and its highlight on the exchange of knowledge, technology and labour). This novelcollaboration will be improved by through synergies, networking activities, organisation of workshop, summer school, webinars, and final conference to facilitate sharing of knowledge. The circular knowledge exchange is based on systematic and triple-helix approach between academia (universities), policymakers (municipalities), and practitioners (SME/NGO) that will contribute both in identifying problems and developing guidelines for their
improvement. This research brings novelty in respect of geographic regions that previously were not sufficiently investigated and inventoried thus providing the basis for further comparative research undertakings and sustainability of the project outcomes in creation of new knowledge.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Between M1-M24, the CONSIDER project has carried the following works in pursuit of its goal to develop sustainable management models for industrial heritage sites (IHS) (See Table 1). With these models, the CONSIDER project at maximizing the benefits for local communities, serving as a resource for bolstering collective identities, enhancing the urban landscape, promoting eco-friendly solutions, and contributing to the urban economy, all in support of a sustainable and brighter future for the city. To achieve these goals, between M1-M24, various research, dissemination, and management activities were carried out for each work package. Additionally, the secondments performed between M1-M24 (23.5PM in total) is presented below.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

CONSIDER has ensured gender balance in research teams, project decision-making, and research contexts by incorporating gender considerations. An equal number of women and men participants for research and outreach activities, were sought in the research and outreach activities.

Regarding the gender dimension, the CONSIDER researchers has focused on the gender perspective to develop CONSIDER lenses for sustainable management of Industrial Heritage Sites. Researcher number 43T (KM), has focused on social inclusiveness in the context of gender, with a focus on gender perspective in industrial heritage management.

Project's impact on secondees and SMEs, two CONSIDER researchers who undertook secondments in Newcastle (3ER) and Vienna (40T) discovered new job opportunities following their secondments. Furthermore, SMEs have strengthened their connections with academia, partners, and policymakers, particularly through organized workshops and webinars under the CONSIDER project. Furthermore, the CONSIDER podcast series, which aims informing and sensibilisation of general public on industrial heritage management, has also enhanced the soft skills of the researchers.

The CONSIDER project is aligned with the EU Framework Programme. Between M1 and M24, the project's impact has extended well beyond the benefits for seconded staff and their host institutions. To date, a variety of networking and scientific activities (two workshops hosted by UA and ZOLL; two webinars organised by KHAS and RUB, one CONSIDER talks organised by KHAS) has been organised to achieve the project's outcomes. These activities encompass the development of a digital assessment tool on industrial heritage, identification of criteria and attributes, and work on case studies and inventories through secondments.

Recognizing the potential of industrial heritage sites and their integration into the urban fabric as offering significant opportunities for developing urban resilience and realizing inclusivity and sustainability in line with SDG 11,discussions have explored how industrial heritage sites can contribute to the sustainable development of cities through workshops and webinars. Additionally, the CONSIDER lenses which we are developing is a tool to reflect sustainable urban development on to industrial heritage management.
