IP1 Traction TD1– Phase 3 and HVAC TD8

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - PINTA3 (IP1 Traction TD1– Phase 3 and HVAC TD8)

Período documentado: 2022-01-01 hasta 2022-12-31

The goals of TD Traction and TD HVAC are in PINTA3, from one side to bring to the market a new generation of traction drive equipment and, on the other side, to develop Green house gases free HVAC

The PINTA3 addresses all of these topics :
• Demonstrators for the next generation of traction systems, including higher reliability & lifetime prediction of power semi-conductors.
• Traction Virtual validation & certification methods and tools
• Eco-friendly Heating, Ventilation Air conditioning and Cooling (HVAC)
• and finally state of the art and technical recommendations for the next decade R&D work to progress on low carbon trains, battery and hydrogen powered regional trains (BEMU/ HMU).
On Traction and HVAC, the problems to be solved was to improve technical performances (energy, noise, weight, volume, reliability) and at the same time reduce the Life Cycle Costs (energy cost, maintenance cost, capital cost) of these components and sub-systems.

The main work done until the end of Period2 ( Dec 2022) was on trains demonstrations of the new prototypes on :
• Silicon Carbide (SiC) traction sub-systems for tramway, metro and regional trains. Demonstrations took place in Germany, Spain and on the Velim test track in Czech republic.
• Low green house gases HVACs demonstrations done on 2 trains in Germany.

In parallel to these demonstrations, the KPIs progress consolidation of the project has been quantified and described in a dedicated Deliverable.
On SiC Traction, an analysis and influence of the SiC technology in the Metro traction system has been described. The other Reports describing SiC Traction demonstrations have been prepared (but not finalized) for AC Traction systems on tramways, sub-urban trains, and regional trains. A first report on Train integration of HST traction system based on independently rotating wheels has been prepared (but not finalized)
On HVAC, an interim field test report and fundamental work report has be prepared ( but not finalized)

On virtual validation, a Deliverable has been released on the application of virtual validation concepts for Traction system.

Recommendations have been done to Europe’s Rail J.U. and Funding Members to develop better answers to operators needs on low carbon trains.

Globabbly, three Deliverables have been released on time and seven others will be released with less than 3 months of delay
Expected results until the end of the project :
On traction demonstrations, the only remaining demonstration to be done is the Talgo one,a wheel motor for HST will be mounted and tested on a train in Spain in 2022 and the related test report will be released

Concerning Power semi-conductors reliability and lifetime prediction, five reports will be released:
• on pre-standardisation : “Requirement specification for climatic conditions for SiC semiconductors with validated data from the vehicle measurements based on conventional trains”
• a set of others reports on power semi-conductor reliability / lifetime models based on accelerated test methodology, smart maintenance improvements.

Concerning the roadmap of low carbon trains, a report will be released “State of play and road map to achieve the full suppression of fossil fuel rolling stock”

Concerning the low carbon HVAC demonstrations, several reports will be released covering two on trains tests campaigns in Germany and the general conclusions on natural refrigerants results.

Two reports will be released on the project KPIs progress consolidation and the pre-standardisation proposals from the project partners

Concerning the Traction virtual validation a final report will be released on the “Status and maturity analysis of virtual design and validation methodologies”

There is no socio-économic impact study in PINTA3
