Periodic Reporting for period 1 - RESET (Restarting the Economy in Support of Environment, through Technology)
Période du rapport: 2021-01-01 au 2022-06-30
We work with relevant stakeholders to develop and test sustainable investments (environmentally, economically and in terms of employment) for farm and urban development. We focus particularly on sustainable development options to manage hazards such as flood, drought, as well as the quality of soil, water and air. We focus on these topics as they are key environmental concerns for Europe that are impacted by urban and farmland management and development.
The objectives of ReSET are to: 1) develop the conceptual underpinnings and framework to better integrate environmental, social science, local knowledge, advanced sensor research and artificial intelligence into the best of class spatial policy support systems; 2) to build upon the group’s existing capabilities to develop a dynamic and spatially explicit sustainable investment toolkit; 3) to link the technical developments made with existing local and European protocols and legislation to ensure the advances and tools produced align as much as possible with policy; 4) to apply dynamic scenario analysis of the employment, environmental and economic impacts of a variety of current sustainable development investments being made at local, regional and European scales in order to better define optimal investments across all three areas.
Our local and regional demonstration projects include: England (London, Oxford-Cambridge Arc, Thames Gateway), Italy (Bologna), Romania (Carasuhat Wetlands) and Spain (Duero Catchment, Rivas-Vaciamadrid and Valladolid).
Integrate: To develop the conceptual underpinnings and framework to better integrate environmental and social science, local knowledge, advanced sensor research and artificial intelligence
Build: To build upon the group's existing state of the art spatial policy support systems to develop a dynamic, hardware and software spatial investment toolkit (ReSET-IT) for coupled social and environmental systems
Link: To link these technological developments with existing local and European protocols and legislation to ensure that the knowledge advances and tools best support plausible policy levers for implementation of green investment
Apply: To apply dynamic scenario analysis of the employment, environmental and economic impacts of a variety of sustainable development post-COVID green recovery pathways at DEMO sites throughout Europe
Learn and teach: To facilitate effective green investment strategy, planning and evaluation by a range of stakeholders
The first 18 months of ReSET have focused significantly on the integrate, build, and apply goals. Work on the other two goals - link and learn and teach - is also underway and will be taking more prominence over the next 18 months. We examined the ethical, data, and health and safety implications of the proposed research and developed the protocols to be adhered to in interactions with stakeholders, and in data collection, management and dissemination. We developed our understanding of the policy and regulatory landscape for green investment across Europe allowing refinement of demonstration sites, and associated investments in nature based solutions (NBS) past, present and future. Much work went into the development of new FreeStation sensors, data loggers as well as hardware and software IoT monitoring functionality for deployment across the range of investment types and locations identified. The focus of the research is to provide evidence of what works, where. Work has started on integration including integration of IoT monitoring and spatial modelling; integration between biophysical and socioeconomic and behavioural modelling; integration of tools in a participatory use process, and integration across demo sites where the investments are similar. We have developed experimental and sampling strategies at each demo site, co-designed with stakeholders at the demo sites in Romania, Italy, Spain and UK. Sensor deployment has taken place at sites in Romania, Spain and UK with deployment in Italy planned for September 22. Dissemination, Collaboration and Exploitation has focused on the development of impact plans, strategies and documentation, on the dissemination of project progress including through our website (www.h2020reset.eu) and social media.
