A NOBLE goal: Untangling the Gordian Knot of evolutionary predictability
How predictable is evolution? What role do changes in the adaptive landscape and developmental biases play? The EU-funded NOBLE project will untangle the Gordian knot of evolutionary predictability. First, ancestral state reconstruction will be used to determine if origination of and loss of novelties are predictable over macroevoluationary timescales. Next, this study will use biomechanical modelling and cutting-edge machine learning to determine whether convergent evolution is a product of adaptation or chance. Finally, NOBLE will examine constraints on phentoypic variation that may increase evolutionary predictability.
