Marine chemical glycobiology: a molecular understanding of the carbon cycle and bioactive sulfated marine glycans

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - MARINEGLYCAN (Marine chemical glycobiology: a molecular understanding of the carbon cycle and bioactive sulfated marine glycans)

Reporting period: 2021-08-01 to 2023-07-31

Marine microalgae sequester as much CO2 into carbohydrates as terrestrial plants, but the molecular mechanisms behind this process remain poorly understood. This EU project has investigated the marine environment using an approach based on chemical biology and automated synthesis. This research is important because by increasing our understanding of the natural world, we can find ways for society to coexist in better harmony with nature. In particular, we aim to contribute to an improved understanding of the carbon cycle. Our approach is transdisciplinary, combining chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, and ecology.
1. Automated synthetic protocols for sulfated glycans.
2. New chemical biology tools for microbiology / ecology research.
3. Environmental quantification of specific types of carbon in the ocean.
