RUN-EU ProfessionaL research programmes for bUsiness and Society

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - RUN-EU PLUS (RUN-EU ProfessionaL research programmes for bUsiness and Society)

Période du rapport: 2023-04-01 au 2024-09-30

RUN-EU PLUS developed an integrated long-term strategy for research and innovation and a framework for practice-based research master’s and doctoral programmes for business and society. The project focused on strengthening collaboration between academia, business and regional stakeholders in the areas of Sustainability, Digitalisation and Social Innovation. The RUN-EU PLUS professional practice-based research programmes complement the existing RUN-EU strategic vision for teaching, learning, research, and engagement activities delivering institutional and societal transformation in our regions. The creation of European collaborative professional practice-based research programmes supports the development of innovative solutions to major societal challenges facing Europe and contributes to the development of a highly skilled labour force that can respond to the needs of our RUN-EU regions. RUN-EU PLUS has mainstreamed open science skills and practices and has developed a Researcher Career Development and Evaluation Programme to support RUN-EU researchers in identifying clear personal career paths encouraging intersectoral mobility during their careers.

RUN-EU PLUS Objectives:

Implementation of a common R&I agenda and collaborative action plan focussed on the strengthening of academic-business partnerships in R&I.

Deliver joint collaborative accredited professional practice-based research degree programmes at both masters and PhD level in association with and for industry, business and societal stakeholders.

Develop and implement strategies to strengthen the capacity of human capital through the development of a collective and collaborative cloud of knowledge portal.

Equip researchers with a combination of pedagogical and research skills and a research career evaluation system to reward researcher excellence at all career development stages.

Mainstream Open Science practices and skills.

Reinforce cooperation in R&I activities across and between alliance members and their associated industry, business and societal stakeholders and partners.

Contribute to the development of the ERA Hubs by fostering joint R&I activities across the RUN-EU alliance.
The RUN-EU PLUS project successfully developed an integrated long-term strategy for research and innovation collaboration across the RUN European University. RUN-EU PLUS defined a roadmap and accreditation action plan for the development of collaborative professional practice-based research masters and PhD programmes. These programmes are accredited, scalable, interdisciplinary, and focused on Business and Society. Sustainability, Digitalisation and Social Innovation. RUN-EU PLUS has developed more than 60 collaboratively supervised PhD programmes, a PhD in Digitalisation Engineering which leads to a joint PhD award, Collaborative PhD programmes in the areas of Tourism, Social Sciences, Biotechnology, Polymers and Entrepreneurship and Innovation which involve programme teams across the alliance, co-creation with regional partners, are practice based and involve the mobility of researchers to a RUN-EU partner country.

The project has created an Innovation Showcase of technology and service offerings for promotion to our RUN-EU regions and beyond.

RUN-EU PLUS has developed a Researcher Career Development Training Programme designed to provide researchers with research and transferrable skills required for successful research careers. This Career Development Programme is supported by the Cloud of Knowledge Portal and the Researcher Career Evaluation System, both support tools developed by the project. The creation of a Cloud of Knowledge Portal allows RUN-EU researchers to collectively share expertise, data and resources to support their pedagogical and research skills development. The RUN-EU PLUS Researcher Career Evaluation System for RUN-EU researchers is a practical tool, available to all researchers, which they can use to undertake their own research skills self-assessment and apply their findings to develop a personal training plan which will support their training needs in accordance with their chosen career path.

The project has hosted 3 online Annual International Conferences on Applied Research with Business and Society (ICARUS) with over 600 delegates attending. The annual ICARUS conference engages research students, scholars, researchers, and business and society stakeholders in discussions concerning the development of practice-based research degree programmes, open science practice and researcher career development across the RUN-EU network.

Networks of R&I Ambassadors, Open Science Ambassadors and Gender & Diversity Ambassadors have been established to promote diversity and inclusion, advance open science and promote a more diverse inclusive research community, leading to better research outcomes and greater societal outcomes.

The project has laid a strong foundation for future research and innovation by developing an integrated long-term strategy tailored to the regions. Exploitation of results will focus on integrating the strategy tools and training programmes developed into future initiatives to support researcher development. Co-operation in R&I with regional organisations will be maintained and further developed in RUN-EU Cycle 2.
The Degree Development Roadmap and Accreditation Action Plan for joint and collaborative practice-based research degree programmes at both masters and PhD level has been created and applied to the development of the research master’s and PhD programmes within the RUN-EU PLUS project. By developing these collaborative research degree programmes, the project has responded to societal and business needs, enhanced the skills and expertise of researchers, promoted interdisciplinary research and contributed to economic growth, innovation and sustainable development.

RUN-EU PLUS has created a new shared interdisciplinary innovation ecosystem which facilitates the creation of a research-driven inter-university RUN-EU campus, embedded in all of the RUN-EU regions, and in collaboration will all of the relevant stakeholders, incentivising high-quality researchers and innovators to work together to transform the innovation landscape.

The RUN-PLUS Researcher Career Development Training Programme has been developed and implemented. Topics include Open Science Practices, Attractive Researcher Careers and Approaches to Early-stage Supervision. This programme has a direct impact on our human capital resources and in particular on strengthening the support systems available to our researchers and innovators in identifying clear personal career paths which will encourage inter-sectoral and international mobility during their careers.

The Cloud of Knowledge Portal plays a key role in strengthening the capacity of researchers and innovators to address societal challenges and ensures the outcomes of the project are communicated to the relevant stakeholders involved.

The creation of an Innovation and Technology Showcase by the project has had a significant impact by highlighting the innovative shared services and technology offerings to our region’s businesses and societal partners, which has facilitated greater collaboration and knowledge transfer.

The RUN-EU PLUS project had a strong socio-economic impact by driving regional growth through targeted initiatives and strategies that have addressed business and societal needs.
