Holistic & Green Airports

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - OLGA (Holistic & Green Airports)

Reporting period: 2023-04-01 to 2024-09-30

The hOListic & Green Airports (OLGA) project contributes to solving the complex challenge of environmental transition at airports by implementing a wide variety of environmental innovations, in a holistic approach. OLGA partners (airports, airline, handler, industry, research, SMEs) unite a wealth of expertise. 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Paris CDG and Malpensa airports are uniquely positioned to showcase the environmental innovations, while Zagreb and Cluj airports will prove scalability and EU-wide applicability. OLGA thrives to demonstrate innovative environmental solutions applicable to the consortium's member airports and capable of being replicated on a European scale. The solutions are meant to lead to proven CO2 reduction, air quality improvement and biodiversity preservation with involvement of the entire sector's value chain. OLGA results will generate positive environmental, societal and economic impacts that will spread to the local, national and European level. This will be achieved through increase of the environmental Performance from a Flight Operations, Passenger and Freight, and Community prospectives.
WP1 (Baseline & Impact Assessment): Developed a draft Evaluation Framework (80 KPIs) divided into 13 major themes for the 46 technical tasks of OLGA. Technical meetings with key participants helped to ensure coherence and confidence in KPIs choices. The methodology for assessing the key performance indicators has been deployed and the partial reference reports for all the tasks of working groups 3, 4 and 5 have been issued.

WP2 (Transport: Landside, access and multimodal connection): IT solution for optimization of e-buses developed. A transport demand and supply analysis have been done. Data collection and validation of the model H2 infrastructure and service being prepared in Milan for Olympic games. A Multi modal optimisation algorithms and platform have been developed. Different technologies and scenarios modeled. An agreement on testing the AV in Cluj airport obtained. A survey distributed.

WP3 (Transport airside): WP3.6 and WP3.1 has been completed with excellent results, with the associated deliverables issued (1 submitted and 1 approved). 2 others tasks terminated : WP3.3 and WP3.7.2 with the associated deliverables which are currently being reviewed internally. GSE's electric repowering, the optimisation of charging points, the supervision of aircraft stands are producing very encouraging results.

WP4 (Terminal area): 4 sub-tasks have been completed : WP4.1.1 4.1.2 4.2.2 and 4.2.3. WP4.1.1 and 4.1.2 have started replication work. Participation to conferences and meetings to disseminate conclusions for most of the tasks. Good progress on all tasks. 3 deliverables submitted and 1 under internal review.

WP5 (Energy, Hydrogen): New pilot installation site identified and contractual topics conducted to secure the site for the biogas production. LH2 volumes assessment at “OLGA airports” by 2050 conducted. Regulatory assessment for H2 equipment integration finalised. H2 production site preparation activities in MXP completed. Allocation of a batch of certified SAF at CDG during summer24 realised using the traceability tool developed in the task.

WP6 (Cross cutting): the development of the SaaS platform for emissions and air quality pollutants modelling and monitoring has made significant progress. The air quality source apportionment has continued to support and develop high fidelity monitoring campaigns at CDG (3 campaigns realised + 1 campaign ongoing). Establishment of the "Airport Market place" for the reuse of airport equipment. 1 task completed : WP6.3 (innovative business models for a circular economy). 5 délivrables submitted (included 1 approved).

WP7 (Communication, dissemination and cross‐fertilisation): Work on communication, dissemination and cross-fertilisation, establishing the communication and dissemination strategies and guidelines. Develop OLGA branding and shape the key messages. 3 events organised (2 EP events and 1 conference in Zagreb), press statements and videos have been produced. Dedicated summer 2024 communication campaign carried out. Intervention of OLGA in external conferences. OLGA conducted 4 in-house workshops.

WP8 (Exploitation and Technology Transfer): Focus on delivering and structuring information regarding the innovation exploitation process and IPR management. The CANVAS Model have been developed and discussed among partners. Data collection through a questionnaire have been distributed. 2 deliverables submitted (1 approved), 3 MS achieved and 2 workshops organised.

WP9 (Project Management and common IT framework): Coordinate, monitor and implement the necessary measures for the achievement of OLGA objectives on time. The coordination team has implemented different tools, methodologies and actions to ensure the smooth running of the project within scope, time and budget. Preparation and organisation of the KOM, 4 SC (Milan, Brussels, Zagreb and Paris), finalisation of 1 Amendment request to GA, distribution of Interim Payment 1, organisation of Monthly PMCs, review and submission of the deliverables.

WP10 (Ethics): Ensure compliance with the 'ethics requirements' set by the European Commission. The ethical and gender issues are regularly monitored (H, POPD and EPQ).
WP1: Draft evaluation Framework with 80 KPIs regarding environmental and societal impact that will afford to ensure confidence in innovative solutions and their replicability in other airport areas.

WP2: Optimization of airport landside connectivity (e-bus, H2, bio-fuel, railway) for PAX and cargo traffic using different software and hardware solutions, environmental impact (less CO2, less waste) and socio-economic (better mobility for passengers, less congestions and delays).

WP3: Airside, environmental impact with measures: reducing CO2 emissions through the electrification of GSE, deactivating APU, and utilizing Taxibots. Optimization of the airport's landside connectivity points (charging points) within Paris CDG. Socio-economic benefits is time savings for ground operations.

WP4: Green runway renovation with the creation of a numerical model of taxiways structure and the definition of a sensor instrumentation plan to instrument the different layers of its structure (rehabilitated in summer 2023). BioDiversIT plays import role to create a common interest regarding biodiversity improvement within the airport community; allowing a preliminary alignment of stakeholders regarding fauna and flora protection.

WP5: Three types of energy considered are demonstrated. The lessons learnt will contribute to the upscaling of the solutions and to the replication in other EU airports and their neighbour territories.

WP6: New tools for the assessment of air quality in and around airports; new insights into emissions of VOC and formation and evolution secondary organic aerosols at airports; development of a software platform for the marketing and sale of used airport equipment.
