Kinetic selectivity in molecular sieve sensors

Project description

Novel molecular sieve sensors that mimic nature’s olfaction

Detection and monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is important for many applications like diagnostics via breath analysis and monitoring of toxic chemicals. All these applications require measurements with high sensitivity and selectivity due to low VOC concentrations and the presence of interfering compounds. The EU-funded KISSIES project will combine porous crystalline materials with sensor technology to mimic nature’s approach to olfaction and selective sensing, achieving high kinetic selectivity in the tailored nanopores of metal-organic frameworks. The developed novel methodology will have an impact in domains beyond the scope of the project, such as separation technology and adsorption measurements.

Objective

Detecting and monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an important task with applications ranging from disease diagnosis via breath analysis to monitoring exposure to toxic chemicals. However, in all such applications, selectively measuring specific VOCs is challenging due to their low concentrations and the presence of a multitude of interfering compounds. Since current miniature sensors cannot efficiently distinguish between VOCs, there is a need for a novel technology capable of distinguishing a VOC of interest from a complex background.

KISSIES will address this challenge by bridging the worlds of porous crystalline materials and sensor technology. For the first time, kinetic selectivity in the tailored nanopores of metal-organic frameworks will be leveraged to mimic nature’s approach to olfaction and enable selective sensing. This way, KISSIES will not only enable cross-fertilization between research fields that have thus far been separated by traditional subject boundaries but also open up perspectives on solving unaddressed real-world challenges. Moreover, the novel methodology that will be developed will have an impact beyond the scope of the project, in domains such as separation technology and adsorption measurements.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants
