Deep U-tube heat exchanger breakthrough: combining laser and cryogenic gas for geothermal energy exploitation

A Communication and Dissemination Plan CDP is drafted in the first 6 months of the project detailing the objectives targets and actions to be taken in order to properly disseminate the project

Completed laboratory testing and modeling of direct laser and gas interaction with rocks (opens in new window)

Report including the laboratory tests concerning the elaboration of the laser-rock interaction for rocks melting/vaporization, the collection of rock samples for investigation of particle size, vitrification, and composition, the testing of the provided sensor system for temperature management.

Report on various liquid and cryptogenic gases suitable for laser-beam drilling (opens in new window)

The D1.1 summarizes the main characteristics of an appropriate liquid, cryogenic gas to be used in laser beam propulsion drilling. Noble gases such as Argon, Krypton and Helium, as well as Nitrogen, will be considered and compared with regard to their interaction with rocks, sand, aquifers, etc... and the injected laser beams. Moreover, they must be examined with regards to flammability, explosion risks, environmental sustainability and disposal possibilities.

Report concerning the optimization for maximum drilling speed and optimum diameter for the ultra-deep heat exchanger. Based on the exiting gas flow, the optimal diameter for the deep heat exchanger is evaluated.

The management of data collected during DeepU activities concerning mainly laboratory and technological activities is described in the Data Management Plan DMP The DMP will include information on the handling of research data during after the end of the project the kind of data collected processed andor generated by the project which dara will be sharedmade open access and how they will be curated preserved

The report focuses on the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) evaluation of the DeepU technology also by comparison with conventional deep drilling technologies.

The laboratory setup for researching the process parameters and temperature management is ready material to be tested sensors to record temperature humidity and pressure a technical framework for the laser and gas supply as well as the accommodation of the drill string will be defined
