Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Leiden2022-ECS-ESOF (European City of Science and EuroScience Open Forum Leiden 2022)
Período documentado: 2021-08-01 hasta 2023-03-31
Leiden was the very first European City of Science to present a year-long programme aimed at connecting science and society. The mission of Leiden2022 was to create an accessible platform in which anyone who wants to share science, knowledge, art, and skills could participate. During the year, we established multiple new connections between science and society.
As such, Leiden European City of Science was part of the ERA Policy Agenda 2022-2024 of the European Commission: Action 14: Bring Science closer to Citizens. Our four pathways towards impact were: a) bringing science and society closer together; b) fostering innovation and development of new research agendas by stimulating scientific exchange; c) creating an ‘established’ and sustainable label for European City of Science and d) establishing Leiden as a City of Knowledge. The mission of Leiden2022 was to provide an inclusive and accessible value-driven platform for sharing, questioning, facilitating, stimulating and celebrating science, knowledge, art and skills.
Leiden European City of Science 2022 (Leiden2022) has been initiated by Leiden University, the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), Leiden University of Applied Sciences and the Municipality of Leiden (the ‘founding partners’), endorsed by EuroScience (Strasbourg) and the European Commission. Leiden2022 was a proud partner of the New European Bauhaus, and the European Year of Youth.
The main component of the European City of Science programme was the Year of Events: a co-created platform uniting science, knowledge, arts and skills. Positioning the European City of Science as a year-round programme with a multitude of scales worked like a magnet. The Knowledge throughout the Neighbourhoods built bridges between science and local society, by co-creating activities in the capillaries of Leiden and the region. Every two years, EuroScience in Strasbourg awards the title of European City of Science to a new European city that hosts the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF). The 10th edition of ESOF was hosted by Leiden, from 13 to 16 July 2022.
The European Science in the City Festival (ESCF) hosted a whole month of lively activities in the city of Leiden highlighting the broader fields of science, knowledge, arts, and crafts, with the aim to showcase cutting-edge research projects, embed the festival within the ESOF conference, and connect the festival to the overall, 365 days-long programme of Leiden European City of Science 2022.
Although the title has been around for some time, Leiden is the first city ever to present a year-round programme on science, knowledge, art, and skills. In doing so, we kickstarted a new European tradition.
Through our full Year of Events, we connected the dots between multiple scientific events, such as the 10th EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), the 33rd EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) and the very 1st EU TalentOn. Thus, we created a European programme on a local scale, with a national outreach, aimed at connecting science with society.
The programme was evaluated in several ways. Based on the four pathways and the strategic goals of the Founding Partners, research agency CigarBox was commissioned to present an Impact Report. Furthermore, the aim to create sustainable relationships between citizens and scientists has led to several legacy projects.
• Future European Cities of Science will continue to present year-long programmes aimed at connecting science with society, starting with Katowice European City of Science 2024.
• The Leiden2022 Model for Public Engagement with Science will continue to serve as a source of inspiration;
• The Ministry of the Future will continue to grow and develop;
• Leiden2022’s Founding Partners have expressed intentions to continue the Knowledge throughout the Neighbourhoods program;
• P.O.Box71 been adopted by Leiden University and will continue to exist;
• The local theme weeks initiated by Leiden2022 (Life Sciences & Health Week, ArtScience Week, Space Week) will continue to exist on a yearly basis;
• Many more local, national and international spin-off will add up to this legacy.
