MAximising the synergy of European research Governance and Innovation for Climate Action

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - MAGICA (MAximising the synergy of European research Governance and Innovation for Climate Action)

Período documentado: 2022-06-01 hasta 2023-11-30

MAGICA maximizes the synergies between infrastructure investments and initiatives of climate change research and innovation across the European Research Area (ERA) by building upon and further implementing the Mission of JPI Climate in support to the international and European climate agenda (including the European Green Deal and Adaptation Strategy).
MAGICA aims to accelerate the development, provision, and exchange of knowledge from research and innovation to inform and support policymaking and climate actions via a better coordination of on-going and future initiatives and a more efficient use of resources.
MAGICA is based on circular and iterative interactions among the strategic, scientific and societal components of climate change research and innovation. An ongoing debate and discussion with the scientific community on climate R&I priorities has been held: outcomes of such a debate will be synthesized in a Joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda on climate change for ERA 2025-2034.

In addition, the creation of a regular forum with European Ministries of Research and Climate and other funding bodies, the Equinox Summit, fosters the coordination of the different national research policies to meet the ERA-wide priorities and needs identified by the scientific community.

MAGICA has also been implementing a multi-directional dialogue with different relevant social actors (from policymakers to the younger generations) through different international conferences such as ECCA 2023, workshops, such as the online Science communication strategies for climate change research Workshop, and other innovative formats to inform citizens but also to detect the social needs concerning the transition to climate- neutrality and climate science. The outcomes of such dialogue are being incorporated into scientific community's priorities for research, thus closing the feedback loop.
MAGICA aims to accelerate the development, provision and exchange of knowledge from research and innovation to inform and support policy-making and climate actions via a better coordination of on-going and future initiatives and a more efficient use of resources.

The project ambition is to guide future climate research through a scientifically rigorous, democratic and open iterative process involving the strategic, scientific and social components of climate change research and innovation. On one hand, the engagement of European Research funding agencies (gathered within JPI Climate) contributes to enhance the alignment and coordination of climate change research programmes across ERA and thus facilitates the design and endorsement of a Joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) on climate change for ERA 2025-2034.

On the other hand, MAGICA fosters a multi-directional exchange between the scientific community, policy-makers and society to increase the quality of both research and policy and also their social legitimacy. Through the organization of institutional dialogues and fora (e.g. the Equinox Process), international conferences and workshops (e.g. ECCA2023, COP28 side event) and exchanges with younger generations (e.g. MAGICA Summer Schools), the project fosters concrete mechanisms and platforms to accelerate the effective transfer of robust and authoritative knowledge that informs and enables effective decisions and actions towards the transition to a climate-neutral and resilient Europe.
