Central European Advanced Therapy and Immunotherapy Centre

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - CREATIC (Central European Advanced Therapy and Immunotherapy Centre)

Período documentado: 2023-09-01 hasta 2025-02-28

The Central European Advanced Therapy and Immunotherapy Centre (CREATIC) aims to address the significant unmet medical needs of patients with rare diseases and high-risk cancers. Approximately 30 million EU citizens suffer from one of over 6000 recognized rare diseases, with 80% of these being genetic and often life-threatening. Despite the European Commission's efforts through the Orphan Medicinal Product Regulation and Paediatric Regulation, 95% of rare diseases still lack approved therapeutic options. This gap represents a substantial economic burden and a critical need for innovative treatments.
CREATIC's vision is to become a flagship institution in Central and Eastern Europe, providing cutting-edge research and development in gene and somatic cell therapies. The project is coordinated by Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, in collaboration with leading European research institutions such as Fraunhofer, Leipzig University, and the University of Copenhagen.
The main project objectives are as follow:
1. Strengthen Multidisciplinary Expertise: Enhance research and innovation (R&I) capabilities in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), focusing on both gene and somatic cell therapies.
2. Build a Role Model Institution: Establish CREATIC as a sustainable, autonomous center of excellence with robust governance, infrastructure, and human resources.
3. Create an Ecosystem for ATMP Delivery: Develop a comprehensive ecosystem involving stakeholders from academia, industry, healthcare, and regulatory bodies to facilitate the translation of research into clinical practice.
During the project's implementation, we successfully achieved its primary goals: establishing the Centre of Excellence at Masaryk University and integrating it into the organizational structure. The project also focused on creating autonomous decision-making mechanisms for the new Centre of Excellence and embedding these within the broader management framework. In collaboration with our partners, we developed a Scientific and Development Strategy, which serves as a fundamental pillar for future growth. Additionally, we formulated an HR Strategy that includes Recruitment and Selection Rules. Lastly, we established the Knowledge Valorization Unit and the Platform for Implementation of Advanced Therapies (PLATIN). All these achievements formed the basis for the fulfilment of the strategic objectives of the project.
The project aims to revolutionize the treatment of rare diseases and high-risk cancers by developing personalized ATMPs. By integrating advanced scientific research with social science and humanities (SSH) principles, CREATIC will ensure that these therapies are not only effective but also accessible and economically sustainable.

Scientific and Technological Impact:
1. Development of innovative ATMPs, including cell and gene therapies.
2. Establishment of a high-end precision medicine platform for therapy individualization and patient monitoring.
3. Creation of a multidisciplinary research platform

Socio-Economic Impact:
1. Improved health outcomes and quality of life for patients with rare diseases.
2. Reduction in healthcare costs associated with untreated rare diseases.
3. Enhanced collaboration and knowledge transfer within the European research community.

Educational Impact:
1. Upgraded doctoral and undergraduate programs in pharmacology and ATMPs.
2. Training and capacity-building for healthcare professionals and researchers.

By addressing these critical needs, CREATIC is poised to make significant contributions to advanced therapies, ultimately improving patient outcomes and fostering a more resilient and innovative healthcare system in Europe.
