Project description
Seeing science in action
Attention residents of the northern Netherlands! Did you know about the impact of sleep and toxins on public health, and about related researchers and their work? The main goal of the HPNNING project is to promote science and scientists on public health in an interactive way. It will teach children about the effect of sleep and toxins on our health. The project will also train teachers and bring science into their classrooms, as well as hold European Researchers’ nights. HPNNING will then conduct a tour of the schools and community centres. This way, students will have the opportunity to see science in action.
Objective
Healthy Public eNgagemeNt IN Groningen - Chronically Healthy promotes science and scientists on public health in an interactive, accessible and innovative way. Our main goal is to inform the residents of the northern Netherlands on the impact of Sleep and Toxics on public health and about researchers and their work.
Education program
We teach children about the effect of Sleep and Toxics on our health and ways to avoid being harmed by toxic elements in water, food, soil or air or by lack of sleep. By bringing researchers into the classroom and having children actively perform science, we increase their understanding of science and encourage the pupils to embark on research careers. Besides that we train teachers to bring science into their classrooms, which promotes a durable effect.
European Researchers Nights
During the Nights a bridge is built between researchers and the audience in an entertaining and educational quiz show. The show invites multidisciplinary researchers to share their research findings on Sleep (2022) and Toxics (2023) and invites members of the public to share their experience. Both years two different shows are created; one for children and one for adults.
Both years an interactive exhibit will be developed. Engaging with this exhibit, the visitor gains insight in the importance of Sleep and Toxics and the role of science in everyday life. Moreover, the visitor experiences how she can - directly or indirectly - take more control of her own health and the people around her. Alongside the exhibit, researchers will hold informal, accessible and interactive talks on their own subject of research.
Post-events
After the Night, the exhibit will tour to schools and community centres in the region to reach out to the public that does not usually interact with science. In excursions to the visualisation experts of the University of Groningen and the Dutch authority on food and consumer product, school classes get to see science in action.
