Project description
Underprivileged students are co-creating science
Among the EU priorities for 2024, one goal is to ‘eliminate all forms of discrimination and promote equal rights and opportunities for all’. The EU-funded RAISE project will contribute to this purpose, reaching members of society that continue to be left out or feel detached from science, with a special programme addressed to 2 500 underserved or underprivileged school students. Moreover, two editions of the European Researchers’ Nights will be held at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Portugal with live streaming for selected activities. These will be immersive experiences co-created by the researchers, with the collaboration of students, artists, athletes, different institutions, and the public, rather than designed and delivered by the researchers for the public, around the motto ‘RAISE for well-being, RAISE for social impact’.
Objective
Researchers in Action for Inclusion in Science and Education (RAISE) aims to reach members of society that continue to be left out or feel detached from science. It is built around an original concept of co-creation that will harmoniously blend the European Researchers Nights (ERNs) activities with the Researchers at School (RAS) activities, making the ERN feel like a continuum of the RAS programmes. Towards this end, RAISE is structured around two science outreach and education RAS programmes (named Cientista Regressa Escola and Cincia di Noz Manera) that will target close to 2,500 underserved and/or underprivileged school students, and two editions of the ERN that will be held at the outstanding Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU) and live-streamed, reaching an additional 3,000 people in Portugal and through Portuguese as well as other relevant languages. Working at the national level, our original approach will result in ERNs programmes that are immersive experiences co-created by the researchers and the public rather than designed and delivered by the researchers for the public. Thanks to the evidence-based methodologies that will be applied and our culturally responsive co-production approach, sustained collaborations and partnerships between European or Europe-based researchers and school students, teachers, artists and members of the public at large will be created, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse landscape in science and education, and a more scientifically literate society in Portugal. Importantly, RAISEs activities will be developed around the motto RAISE for Wellbeing. RAISE for Social Impact.'' and they will be connected to all the five EU Missions through the RAS programmes and specifically to the Mission on Cancer at the ERNs.
