Indigenous Migration Law - Emic Visions on Borders

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - IMi-Vision (Indigenous Migration Law - Emic Visions on Borders)

Reporting period: 2023-09-01 to 2025-08-31

IMi-Vision aimed to pursue three specific objectives (SO): • SO1) identify Indigenous, domestic and international norms and regulations governing migration through two case-studies: one in Europe (Saami communities) and another in Latin America (Cofán communities) – this objective is reached by applying an interdisciplinary research method to engage with IPs on their laws, practices and regulations of migrations, interviews with legal experts, as well as desk-research; • SO2) investigate how norms and regulations on migration stemming from different legal orders operate in practice and relate to each other – this objective is reached by analyzing and classifying incidences of inter-normativity observed in practices, narratives and laws; • SO3) contribute with a theory on challenges and conditions to the recognition of IPs’ lawmaking competence on migration – this objective is reached by assessing the scope of Indigenous laws and through key legal concepts (sovereignty; self-governance, autonomy and borders).

Regrettably, none of these objectives have been eventually achieved due to the unilateral decision of the fellow to renounce to the fellowship 8 days after its start.
