Innovative and Sustainable High Voltage Li-ion Cells for Next Generation (EV) Batteries

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - IntelLiGent (Innovative and Sustainable High Voltage Li-ion Cells for Next Generation (EV) Batteries)

Período documentado: 2022-09-01 hasta 2024-02-29

IntelLiGent will contribute towards a strong and independent European battery industry by developing safe, sustainable, long-lasting generation 3b Li-ion batteries. For global competitiveness IntelLiGent will combine novel materials-based approaches with recent developments in battery digitalization to raise LIBs with high-voltage cathodes and high-capacity silicon-graphite anodes to TRL 6. The IntelLiGent targets for energy density and specific energy are 950 Wh/L and 350 Wh/kg on cell level. These targets will be achieved by developing optimized materials and electrode designs with active material loadings ≥4.5 mAh/cm2. In addition, high power density and specific power targets of 1500 W/L and 700 W/kg will enable rapid charging.
The IntelLiGent battery will have a cycle life exceeding 2000 deep cycles with 80% remaining capacity. IntelLiGent will leverage the European battery value chain to minimize the environmental impact of cell production by banning fluorinated binders as well as harmful organic solvents from the slurry processing and minimising the amount of Li needed for high energy operation. Critical raw materials cobalt and natural graphite will be excluded and replaced by an advanced LNMO chemistry coupled with a synthetic Si-Gr composite manufactured via a low-energy-consuming process to assist the vision of the European Union to become carbon neutral by 2050. The IntelLiGent battery will have a price tag of <100 € kW/h on pack level.
This report gives a comprehensive overview of activities and progress achieved in IntelLiGent during
the first reporting period. The technical activities in the first reporting period cover the development
of IntelLiGent 1 and activities towards IntelLiGent 2 materials. All planned deliverables in the first
reporting period have been delivered however, not all milestones are met in its entirety (See chapter
5.1). Partial delays in the development of some of the IntenLiGent 1 materials of 6-9 months,
combined with too ambitious timelines planned for scale-up has resulted in a need for 12-month
budget neutral extension to meet the targeted KPIs.
