Unlocking the Cloud Edge IoT demand potential in Europe

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - UNLOCK-CEI (Unlocking the Cloud Edge IoT demand potential in Europe)

Reporting period: 2023-12-01 to 2024-11-30

UNLOCK-CEI’s aims to facilitate and accelerate the deployment of the Cloud-to-Edge-IoT (CEI) computing continuum in Europe by focusing on the demand-side drivers and challenges to identify technology-driven innovation and business opportunities driving demand value chains. The project represents the CEI demand constituency, provides insights and guidance to the Horizon Europe R&D projects in this domain, and contributes to a proactive dialogue with the supply stakeholders to encourage the development of an open European CEI ecosystem. It focuses on emerging value chains where investment is needed to foster the deployment of the Cloud-to-Edge-IoT continuum through the forthcoming CEI large-scale pilots. UNLOCK-CEI carries out a systematic assessment of the state of the open European CEI ecosystem and develops CEI market dynamics as well as future market scenarios and related market pathways for the development of the open European CEI ecosystem. It engages with industry stakeholders for CEI potential demand and develops a productive and effective interface between the demand constituency and the supply side. With a specific focus on Meta-OS projects, UNLOCK-CEI coordinates this portfolio of projects from the supply side through mechanisms such as WP4 as well as TF4 and TF5. In the meantime, through TF6 and collaboration with Open Continuum project, UNLOCK-CEI contributes to mobilisation and engagement of RIAs portfolios as well.
Analysis of CEI Demand Market & Business Opportunities:
Extensive research analyzed the CEI demand market across five verticals in Europe, forecasting technology uptake, solutions adoption, key use cases, drivers, and barriers. A mix of desk research, surveys (700+ interviews), and deep-dive interviews with key market players informed the analysis. Further interviews with value chain actors and end-users, alongside a gap analysis framework, identified key gaps and recommendations. Task Force 5 engaged Meta-OS use cases, and a catalogue for the Cognitive Cloud Cluster was developed.

Market Scenarios & Adoption Readiness Framework:
A readiness framework, supported by market analysis and surveys, informed preliminary market scenarios and pathways. Insights from value chain adopters and Meta-OS use cases enriched the final pathways. Architectural patterns for CEI market use cases were also developed.

Engagement with CEI Demand Value Chain Actors:
Five value chain adopters’ groups were mobilized, with 10 workshops and follow-up interviews capturing service requirements. Industrial event participation further refined insights on market dynamics, resulting in CEI value chain building blocks and preliminary gap identification.

Dialogue with Supply-Side :
Meta-OS RIAs and projects were mapped for technological scope, challenges, and solutions. The CEI-LING tool was launched, offering adoption readiness insights to value chain stakeholders. Three industry sessions engaged Meta-OS use cases, providing market feasibility feedback. Additional support was given to Meta-OS projects for open calls through Task Force 4, alongside ongoing coordination and showcasing efforts via events, webinars, and workshops.

Engagement & Outreach:
A comprehensive communication and dissemination strategy was executed, including portal establishment, social media, campaigns, events, newsletters, and post-event materials. An exploitation and sustainability plan for Key Exploitable Results was implemented. Task Force 6 of EU-CEI, in collaboration with Open Continuum CSA and Nexus Forum CSA, was actively supported.

Synergies & Collaboration:
Since inception, UNLOCK-CEI has prioritized synergies and collaboration, engaging with Open Continuum, EU-CEI communities, and industry clusters (AIOTI, BDVA, EPoSS, FIWARE, DataSpaces). Joint events, webinars, and workshops were conducted with other CSAs (e.g. AllPros, CISERO), RIAs (TF5-TF6 market insights), and strategic initiatives, culminating in a final event and flagship sessions (AIOTI, BDVA, HiPEAC, ADRA, etc.).
