EU SDG-driven Innovation Ecosystems Stimulating economic growth and addressing innovation support imbalances in Europe and beyond

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - SDG-INOV-ECOS (EU SDG-driven Innovation EcosystemsStimulating economic growth and addressing innovation support imbalances in Europe and beyond)

Reporting period: 2023-08-01 to 2024-07-31

SDG-Driven Tech Innovation Ecosystems is a practice-based international consortium comprising GSG Impact and our National Partners for Impact investing in Israel (IFIE), France (FAIR), Italy (SIA), and Portugal (MAZE). The project also involves ancillary partners in Central European (CEE) countries.
Between October 2022 - Jan 2023, Consortium partners undertook an extensive mapping of their local market, looking at the policies, initiatives, actors, and resources that shape their local ecosystems. The aim of the mapping was to identify key strengths and barriers in their respective ecosystems, with a view to sharing and building best practices.

Through this mapping, the Consortium also proposed an SDG-driven tech innovation ecosystem Building Blocks Framework capturing the roles and activities of SDG-Driven tech innovation ecosystem components, namely, that of market participant, market facilitator, and market regulatorThe SDG-Driven Innovation Ecosystem project has developed a strategic plan to maximize the impact of its findings and support both academic and practical advancements in SDG-driven tech innovation. Key deliverables, such as the SDG Innovation Ecosystem Guidebook, Development Roadmap, and Mapping Study, serve as foundational resources for policymakers, investors, and ecosystem builders.

Strategies for long-term exploitation include integrating project insights into National Advisory Boards (NABs) across countries and applying the Development Roadmap in at least 12 nations. The research methodology is adaptable and will continue to be used outside the consortium, encouraging collaboration and shared learning.

To reach a broad audience, the project has used a multi-channel communication strategy, including:
- Publications: The executive summary of the mapping study received over 25,000 clicks, reflecting strong engagement.
- Events and Webinars: Workshops, panels, and a webinar reached over 130 participants at events like the GSG Global Impact Summit 2023.
- Social Media: With 37 posts and newsletters, the project generated significant engagement.
- Knowledge Sharing Platform: Open access to project resources ensures continued dissemination and accessibility.
**1. Ecosystem Mapping (Oct 2022 - Jan 2023):**
A detailed study was conducted in Israel, France, Italy, Portugal, Estonia, Poland, and Lithuania using research, interviews, and roundtables. The goal was to identify local strengths and barriers, and best practices were shared. This resulted in the introduction of the SDG-driven Tech Innovation Ecosystem Building Blocks Framework.

**2. Synthesis Report and Launch (Oct 2023):**
The GSG compiled country reports and issued a synthesis report at the GSG Global Impact Summit 2023 in Malaga, Spain. The SDG-driven Tech Innovation Ecosystems project was officially launched, with panel sessions and a workshop.

**3. Mapping Study Findings:**
The study explored policies, actors, and resources across seven countries, identifying 19,000 startups. The SDG-driven Tech Innovation Ecosystems Building Blocks Framework was introduced.

**4. Subsequent Phases and Webinar (Jan 2024):**
The findings served as the basis for future project phases. A global webinar presented results, focusing on the role of industry, scaling solutions by startups, and digital social innovation.

**5. Finalizing Recommendations (Post-Webinar):**
The consortium finalized best practices and next steps for implementation across partner countries.
