Twin4Twin achieved results that go beyond incremental improvements by combining technological innovation with institutional transformation, enabling CORE IC to evolve from a technology provider into a fully operational Research & Innovation hub embedded in the European Industry 4.0 ecosystem.
At organisational level, Twin4Twin delivered a comprehensive R&I capacity modernisation programme through the twinning process, transferring mature practices in Digital Twin development, proposal preparation, financial governance and knowledge management from leading partners to CORE. These were operationalised through concrete tools and services, including a Financial Project Management framework, an Agentic-AI–powered Knowledge Repository, experiential proposal development methodologies, and open Proposal Writing Workshops. Together, these interventions established sustainable R&I processes at CORE and significantly increased proposal readiness, leading to 16 Horizon Europe proposals generated through open workshops alone.
At ecosystem level, Twin4Twin created a new national innovation instrument: the Greek Smart Factory (GSF). Designed as a vendor-neutral Industry 4.0 platform structured around four operational hubs (Research, Demonstration, Learning, Events & Networking), GSF integrates applied research, industrial piloting, workforce upskilling and ecosystem activation into a single coordinated framework. Supported by a phased business roadmap and CORE Partnership Programme, GSF provides Greece with its first systematic “test-before-invest” environment for advanced manufacturing technologies and a scalable model for academia–industry collaboration.
From a technological perspective, Twin4Twin delivered an integrated Hybrid Digital Twin for metal Additive Manufacturing, combining physics-based reduced-order models with AI-driven visual defect detection and real-time data streaming. The system was validated end-to-end on an operational Laser Powder Bed Fusion testbed, demonstrating selective part deactivation, improved Overall Equipment Effectiveness, increased production efficiency, and operator-centric decision support. A full replication roadmap defines modular architectures, open-source building blocks, and deployment scenarios (research, pilot, industrial), enabling scalable adoption across manufacturing environments.
Beyond these flagship results, Twin4Twin generated a portfolio of exploitable assets addressing both technological and organisational dimensions of Industry 4.0 adoption:
• The Digital Twins Best Practice Atlas, documenting 31 real-world Digital Twin applications, providing manufacturing companies, technology providers and Digital Innovation Hubs with a structured reference for Digital Twin maturity and implementation pathways.
• CORE Innovation Days, established as an annual Industry 4.0 ecosystem platform bringing together manufacturing companies, technology providers, research organisations and policymakers, already engaging over 300 stakeholders across two editions.
• A complete Business Model for the Greek Smart Factory, defining governance, service portfolio, funding mechanisms and scale-up strategy, enabling commercial operation and long-term sustainability.
• The CORE Proposal-to-Project training game and Proposal Writing Workshops, delivering experiential R&I capacity building for SMEs, universities, RTOs and corporate innovation teams, translating proposal knowledge into actionable project concepts.
• A Knowledge Repository powered by Agentic AI, supporting internal R&I operations by enabling intelligent retrieval, synthesis and reuse of project knowledge for proposal writers, project managers and innovation consultants.
These results follow differentiated exploitation routes: research-first pathways for the Hybrid Digital Twin, Digital Twin Atlas and Knowledge Repository, and commercial pathways for the Greek Smart Factory, CORE Innovation Days, proposal training game and workshops. Together they form an integrated exploitation portfolio spanning deep-tech innovation, ecosystem platforms and R&I management services.
By coupling advanced Digital Twin technology with structural organisational change, Twin4Twin demonstrates how twinning can translate scientific excellence into durable institutional capacity, industrial uptake and regional innovation infrastructure—providing a repeatable model for widening countries to build competitive, Industry 4.0-ready R&I ecosystems.
