The primary objective of the SUPERSHINE project was to drive sustainable and energy-efficient renovations in social housing districts across Europe. By focusing on three pilot lighthouse districts in Italy, Denmark, and Latvia, the project aimed at demonstrating the potential of integrating zero-carbon technologies and social engagement strategies into building renovations. These efforts contributed directly to reducing energy poverty, enhancing social inclusivity, and increasing the quality of life for residents of social housing. SUPERSHINE seeked to establish replicable models for the comprehensive renovation of social housing districts, incorporating innovative financial solutions, stakeholder engagement, and advanced technological frameworks. The project is aligned with the European Green Deal and aimed at supporting the EU’s broader goals of achieving climate neutrality by promoting circular economy principles, decarbonization, and the integration of nature-based solutions. Through a participatory approach, SUPERSHINE tried to empower residents and local stakeholders by involving them in the co-design and co-development of solutions, ensuring that the renovated districts meet both technological and social needs. These solutions were intended to be tailored to specific socio-economic contexts to maximize social capital, inclusivity, and community integration while promoting economic and environmental sustainability. The project's methodologies were validated through rigorous KPI assessments across environmental, economic, and social dimensions, paving the way for wide-scale replication across Europe.
The project also emphasized the importance of circular economy principles by prioritizing the use of sustainable building materials, waste reduction, and resource optimization. SUPERSHINE also aimed at developing and piloting innovative financial models, including public-private partnerships (PPPs) and crowdfunding mechanisms, specifically designed to support the renovation of social housing districts. These financial models will attract both public and private investments, ensuring the scalability and financial sustainability of the project. The models were validated in the lighthouse districts and refined for broader replication in additional European cities, including Portugal, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey. This approach created detailed blueprints for widespread application, contributing to the European Green Deal's Renovation Wave strategy.
