Multi-Pillar Framework for children Anti-Obesity Behavior building on an EU biobank, Micro Moments and Mobile Recommendation Systems

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - BIO-STREAMS (Multi-Pillar Framework for children Anti-Obesity Behavior building on an EU biobank, Micro Moments and Mobile Recommendation Systems)

Período documentado: 2023-05-01 hasta 2024-10-31

During the last decades, overweight & obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions across EU. Prevalence in childhood is particularly alarming, resulting in psychological impacts & increased risks for NCDs. However, although obesity-related research has provided interesting results, several issues arise due to the lack of meta-reviews & the nature of data collected. To address this, Bio-Streams aims on supporting the optimal use (and re-use) of health data (e.g. biological, demographic, epigenetic, etc.) to generate metadata/knowledge and provide new evidences, methodologies & tools for: a) creating and deploying the Bio-Streams Biobank that will act as a scientific platform for research in obesity and better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches;b) understanding the transition from metabolically healthy to unhealthy, preventing under age obesity; c) designing better strategies to educate & empower young citizens for weight self-management; d) coordinating authorities & policy makers to develop cross-sectoral solutions for health promotion& under age obesity prevention. Specifically, Bio-Streams delivers a dedicated under age obesity biobank providingreal-world health data (including biospecimens, anthropometrics, behavioural and cost data) from retrospective and prospective sources, while taking into account efficient data harmonisation and standardisation principles, transforming data valorisation towards under age obesity prevention and future research. Moreover, the Bio-Streams framework for data handling, provides robust and transparent methodologies for operational procedures (data infrastructures), analysis and reporting (via meta-reviews and AI-based Apps/components, evaluated via 12 multi-site pilots (7 clinical and 5 schools)), citizen awareness and lifestyle alteration, delivering obesity prevention guidelines, knowledge generation while fostering considerable opportunities for regional and national health authorities/policymakers.

Scientific Objectives

SO.1: Create and deploy the Bio-Streams Obesity Biobank, hosting real datasets from different countries and providing open access to realistic synthetic datasets, enabling standardised data collection & analysis

SO.2: Create and deploy the Bio-Streams Obesity Platform as a cloud-based interoperable framework, supporting the Bio-Streams Biobank and hosting dedicated services / tools for a) knowledge sharing and dissemination, b) risk assessment and c) lifestyle recommendations

SO.3: Generate a holistic understanding of the pathophysiology and psychosociology of childhood obesity, building an interpretable link to prevention and management pathways towards long-term health outcomes

Technical Objectives

TO.1: Create a harmonised data model encapsulating overweight and obesity in a holistic manner, tackling semantic enrichment and interoperability across multiple physical and digital healthcare platforms and sources

TO.2: To develop an appropriate regulatory framework for data preservation, analysis & sharing, ensuring (cyber) security, privacy and trust mechanisms, addressing individuals’ rights and data ownership

TO.3: To develop and evaluate ML-based tools for a) obesity risk assessment, b) recommendation of personalised pathways and c) realistic data generation to facilitate knowledge interpretation and analysis for decision support

Clinical & Implementation Objectives

CIO.1: To create and implement a multi-pillar clinical protocol to orchestrate data collection and evaluate key application aspects of Bio-Streams in clinical settings

CIO.2: To create and implement a community-based roadmap coordinating cultivation of healthy environments and citizen awareness in school settings

Societal & Business Objectives

SBO.1: To set up a multidisciplinary network accelerating knowledge transfer, guideline dissemination and deployment of initiatives in relevant settings, triggering policy penetration into societies, supporting health literacy and bringing citizens closer to professionals

SBO.2: To display Bio-Streams applicability, cost-effectiveness and added value, building a market entry strategy

Pathways to Impact are depicted in the relevant uploaded picture
The first 18 months of the project focused primarily on the pilot set up for both educational and clinical settings.

More specifically the work carried out is presented organised per WP:

WP2: Requirement Elicitation & Bio-Streams Blueprint (M1-M12). All objectives were met and the means to prove it are the relevant deliverables submitted on time: D2.1 Knowledge on underage overweight
&obesity, D2.2 Requirements & Use Cases and D2.3 Specifications & Conceptual Architecture
WP3: Bio-Streams Common Data Information Model (M3-M21). D3.1 on Cost-Related Analysis was submitted in M16, and D3.2 Bio-Streams Data Model & D3.3 Knowledge Graph Configuration Manualin M18. However the work continues in WP3 with improvements in the harmonisation and curation process of the already collected retrospective data.
WP4: Bio-Streams EU Biobank (M10-M40): WP4 has not yet produced deliverables however the progress is reported during the plenary and scheduled meetings. All equipment at clinical sites is ready for SW installation.
WP5:Bio-Streams Obesity Platform (M6-M44). D5.1 on Technical Architecture submitted (M18)
WP6:Actor Engagement Strategy, Pilot and Bio-Streams framework Evaluation (M3-M48). WP6 has not yet produced a deliverable. Major developments constitute the retrospective and prospective study protocols as well as the ethics approvals.
