This report will include the methodology and application case studies of the whole set of instrumentation that is used to characterize the beam along the CHARM beamline and up to the device under test. In addition, the report will provide the final list of instrumentation installed in the CHARM beamline along with the technical characteristics, operation principles and calibration values.
Modelling of shielding materials and configurations for test setup standardisation (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will include the simulation of the beamline with different shielding materials to offer the users different configurations for testing space-qualified materials exposed to cosmic rays.
Documentation on the target station construction and use (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)A full CAD description of the target station for exposure of any user-designed device in shielding configurations will be provided.
Report on microdosimetry for GRC simulator calibration (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)In addition to conventional dosimetry, we will characterize the GCR/SPE mixed field using a microdosimeter (TEPC). We expect the TEPC spectra to correlate better with the biological effectiveness of the field
Definition of extraction methodology for parallel use of the heavy ion beamline for different energies (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will include the methodology that has been followed by the Proton Synchrotron (PS) operators and beam physicists to enable the parallel low-rigidity operation of the CHARM beamline to that at the standard, higher rigidity available. In this respect, the report will detail the beam optics and instrumentation used as well as the various settings needed to achieve the required energies and LETs.
Verification of the beam parameter suitability for testing 3D structures (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will focus on the experimental findings derived from the testing of 3D devices within the two facilities. It will analyze how the beam is impacted as it travels through these thick devices, as well as if the beam provided by the two facilities is appropriate for ensuring beam uniform conditions.
Demonstration of the achievements in terms of beam parameters (energy, LET, range, size) (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will include the data that demonstrates that the technical achievement for the CHARM beamline and the TRL upgrade have been achieved. This will include all measurements from instrumentation required to demonstrate that the energy (70-2000 MeV/n), LET (10-40 MeV/(mg/cm2)), range (> 1 mm in Silicon) and size of the beam (up to 20x20 cm2) comply with the initial requirements stated for TRL6-7.
Knowledge transfer turnover report (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will detail the knowledge transfer that has been achieved up to this point in the project for what concerns both the accelerator infrastructure technological development (in order to foster similar actions in other infrastructures) and the data collected for the irradiation of electronics and biological samples. It will also report about one of the two KT webinars planned to happen during the project.
Verification of the compliance with beam parameter requirements and awarding of TRL 6-7 (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will provide the final verification that the TRL6-7 at the two facilities can be achieved by providing the findings of the experimental campaigns held on various golden references tested in standard energy ion facilities. This will include high power diodes, MOSFETs, a stacked memory and a high-complexity device.
Demonstration of LET uncertainty reduction from simulations as a complement to experimental measurements (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will include the simulation data and results related to the calculation of the LET distribution and its evolution as it transverses the various materials in the beamline or of an electronic device. This analysis will be devoted to various levels of device integration and will provide a building block for the experimental measurements. It will also include a benchmark against measurements, such as those retrieved from solid-state detectors. Moreover, this report will discuss the models that are required for the correct physical simulation of VHE ion interaction in semiconductor devices and compare them with those required for standard energy ions. It will also include the appropriate techniques required to model medium complexity devices.
Dosimetry of the GCR/SPE simulator with shielding (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)Here we will present first results of measurements of simulated spectrum behind shields. The measurements will provide the first quantitative ground-based simulation of the shielding effectiveness in space.
Finalised list of beam parameter requirements concurring to establish a TRL 6-7 for the CHARM facility (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will provide the final list of VHE ion beam parameters that are appropriate to award a TRL6-7 to both CHARM and GSI facilities. This will include the most appropriate ion types, energies, LETs, ranges, beam time availability as well as commercial conditions of access for industry.
Beam instrumentation for high-energy low intensity heavy ion beam characterization (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)An Excel list will be created including all the characteristics of the beamline instrumentation sued at Cave A/GSI. This will be a useful list for comparison with CERN/CHARM instrumentation.
Communication and dissemination plan (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)The plan will include the communication means established by the consortium to handle internal data exchange as well as towards the external stakeholders, from radiation effects experts up to the general public. CERN resource and collaboration tools will be preferably used.
Numerical characterization of the CHARM beamline and of detector response (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will include detailed simulation data and results of the transport of the VHE ion beam throughout the CHARM beamline from the PS extraction to the device under test. In addition, the radiation response of the detectors used to calibrate and perform the dosimetry and characterization of the beam will also be provided and will guide the final choice of the most appropriate detectors to be employed.
Validation of beam parameter quality of CERN and GSI infrastructures for testing of electronics (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This report will focus on the experimental study of the beam quality attained in the two facilities by measurements of the energy deposition inside a silicon pin diode. The report will illustrate the methodology employed and its findings may be able to drive the most appropriate modifications required to ensure the quality of the beam at the two facilities.
Experimental measurements on GSI beam instrumentation and dosimetry (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)Here we will report the measured Bragg curves and single-particle measurements with the GSi instrumentation
This is a demonstrator of the setup, including all monitors, tracklers, and range modulator
GCR/SPE simulator optimizer software (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)This is a demonstrator of the software for GCR/SPE simulation. The software will produce the beam attenuator giving as input the GCR/SPE spectrum.
