ScaleAgData

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ScaleAgData (ScaleAgData    )

Período documentado: 2023-01-01 hasta 2024-06-30

The EU's Green Deal targets emphasize data-driven decision-making in agriculture to promote competitiveness and sustainability, yet a significant gap exists in detailed information at scale. Agricultural sensors, which capture vital information about crop and environmental conditions, are an underutilized resource. By integrating these sensor data with other sources like satellite data, regional agri-environmental monitoring capabilities can be enhanced, requiring a shift in monitoring systems and data governance.
ScaleAgData aims to explore how data streams should be governed to benefit all stakeholders, especially farmers, and how these data can be integrated into regional monitoring datasets. Innovations in sensor technology, edge computing, data analytics, and new EO-based products will be co-designed and tested in six Research and Innovation Labs (RI labs) across Europe. Each RI lab focuses on a specific theme: Water Productivity, Crop Management, Yield Monitoring, Soil Health, Grasslands, and Dairy. This thematic diversity enables the collection of sensor data across a broad range of environmental conditions, covering soil, water, air, and living organisms. Improved data products will be available for evaluation and co-design processes, considering both widely monitored crops like wheat and lesser-monitored ones like medicinal plants and quinoa. These RI labs will evaluate the usability and regional transferability of the innovations.
3 Milestones have been completed so far, marking the end of the 1st Iteration of the Co-design and Development Phase as well as the Technology Validation Phase . Main achievements up to M18 are listed below:

1) Project management, GDPR, Gender balance, Legal and Ethical issues management plan was finalized.
2) Open Science and Data Management Plan v1 was finalized.
3) Vision scenarios, Requirements and Innovative Governance Models v1 was finalized for the vertical domains of the RI labs in the first iteration.
4) ScaleAgData generic architecture and data governance, sharing meta architecture and integration of the RI Labs v1 was finalized.
5) Sensor and edge processing selection, development, spatial planning and data collection v1 was finalized.
6) Analysis-ready EO data made available to the RI labs and RI environment.
7) The Research and Innovation environment is operational for use by the consortium members.
8) Data-based farming services v1 was finalized.
9) Sensor-integrated data products v1 was completed.
10) Piloting Plan & Evaluation Methodology v1 was completed.
11) A Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication Plan and Package, including website have been developed.
12) A Dissemination, exploitation and capacity building report, v1 was finalized.
It is still too early to list any concrete results of the project as we are still in the first reporting period of the project. However, in terms of impact, ScaleAgData aims to:

* Create a scientific breakthrough in the development of new applications of new sensors in the agricultural sector
* Increase the uptake of the data sharing framework by other European agriculture sensor networks;
* Increase the uptake of developed data access standards in the implementation of other data sharing frameworks for other sectors
* Increase the uptake of the techniques/software libraries by European agri- EO based data product providers;
* Increase the uptake of data products/applications developed in the Research and Innovation labs to increase agricultural economic and environmental performance;
* Contribute to EU’s offer to EuroGEOSS, “Agriculture of Data” partnership and the RI mission on soil health as well as to the inclusion of new or evolved products in the Copernicus services
* Share the benefits of data sharing reaching all actors in value chain including farmers, leading to a wider adoption, use and sharing of sensor data technologies.
